The Mood

Shit performance, predictable result.
That being said at the start of the season, if you'd said we'd get maybe 5-6 points from the first five games I'd have said you were about right.
I just wouldn't have gone for the games we got the points in.

Leeds (H) - Expected to get something, deserved a draw, lost.
Liverpool (A) - Hoped for something, deserved a draw, drew.
Spurs (H) - Hoped for something, deserved to win, drew.
Villa (A) - Expected to lose, deserved to win, won.
Coventry (H) - Expected to win, deserved to lose, lost.

Think October will be a better month for us.
  • We should beat Palace.
  • Arsenal is a funny one, because we're crap at home but we're actually decent against the big teams at home. Probably a loss but maybe a draw.
  • Ipswich away. If it was home, i'd imagine a loss but since it's away, I think we should beat them.
  • Brentford. They're having a good run but again, it's away.
Will they repeat the Coventry tactics?
I can only foresee more pain for October:
Lose to Palace (we get nil goals);
Lose to Arsenal (we get nil goals)
Draw at Ipswich (Delap to score)
Lose to Brentford (nil goals scored).

That ill take us to 9 games played, so by rights Glasner will then have us playing like Premier League champions, scoring for fun.

That's a fair reflection I think we are just gonna have to get used to this kind of thing this season we will win some games we aren't expected to and then lose/draw ones we should win. What are we now 13th? I think that's about where we will finish this season unless post Christmas we can capitalise on all the sides in Europe's extra games and go on a bit of a run. Sunderland yesterday started brightly but then faded and shipped 5 in the end after their life or death game vs AK on Wednesday and that was a home game.

In fairness Captain, if you go back and watch the BBC highlights and look at the statistics, we dominated Coventry, we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. We've actually been the better team in every game we've played this season so far.

I think in the context, if we'd beat Coventry and drew with Leeds but lost to Villa/Liverpool/Spurs, we'd be a point worse off than we are now but I think people would have expected those outcomes.

I do believe October will be a month where we have a lot of positive results.

I would agree with that 100%. I still think we are heading for safe mid table and a decent FA cup run.

So my mood is, that we will be safe because when teams dont match us we are a troublesome side. However we really have to do something about low blocks and teams matching us. We didnt need 3 centre backs against Coventry. IT dosent even mean dropping a centre back if things are not going as planned, just ask one of them to step into defensive midfield and keep the opposition penned in.

So my mood is that I shouldnt have got hopeful about a European place and stuck my instincts that this is a work in progress with a team that has been left short in the window and had little pre season. Its going to take time and few windows.

Old news to those of you who follow Have I Got News For You, but last night I caught a repeat of an episode from about 9 months ago on the iPlayer. Paul Merton made a gag about Forest. It was a cheap shot but I was so happy - that wouldn't have happened any time since the 90's - we're on the map!

Grrr, the BBC highlights were the only place we dominated Coventry. In reality for large parts of the match they were first to every ball and won every secondary ball. Only after they scored were they content to let us have the ball in front of their massed ranks like some kind of Spartan phalanx and let us think we dominated while we wobbled around like f***ing tortoises doing our best impressions of Sammy Clingan. Bloke beside me shouted drive so many times I thought he'd robbed a bank.

Nah. Most of that’s in your head I reckon. Coventry really weren’t that good. It was a poor game but we still had the better of it in the main. A draw would have been more than fair. We’d all hope for much better against probably the worst team in the division buts lets not overegg how bad it really was.

Well according to the BBC and an analysis of Expected goals from earlier in the week, which I am sure already got most people switched off,

we are +1.37 on goals expected versus our opponents so far so should be 7th.
and by XG we should have scored three more based on our chances so far.
Then on expected goals against we are second best behind only Arsenal.

so heads up we are having a great start.

John McEnroe once had a pop at us on TV. He told someone, “Waiting for you to answer a question is like waiting for Nottingham Forest to win a game.” I think that was during the Freedman era so he must have had his finger on the pulse.

random and very accurate

Reminds me of a time I was taking part in a charity quiz here in Gloucestershire and one of the questions was something along the lines of what a “crap shooter” was or what activity would a “crap shooter” be involved in. Unfortunately this would have been around the the time of our ignominious relegation in 1999 and the question master felt the need to elaborate along the lines of “I don’t mean someone who plays for Nottingham Forest”…

I remember that, of course, but not what the answer was…

Craps is a dice game in America, so shooting craps would be playing dice.
