I saw Paul Young playing live at a pub in Isleworth in the mid 1990's. One of the girlfriends that we went with to the gig had a massive crush on her 1980's heartthrob Paul and couldn't wait to see him.

Little did she know that he was now playing in a Tex-Mex band, Los Pacaminos. Thirty minutes into the bands session, she leans over and asks me 'What time is Paul coming on to play?'. I pointed out that he was already on stage, playing guitar, and was wearing a stetson hat and cowboy boots. In that second, her pin up love interest went from hero to zero.

I'd pay 5-10 million.

He's f***ing shit. He does nothing, doesn't score, even when given open goals.

Awoniyi is 10 times the player he is. At least Awoniyi scores goals and gets on the end of through balls.

Chris Wood is clever with his feet and his link up play and deadly in front of goal.

What does Delap have exactly?

The market has gone even more nuts since then. City made a better profit on Trafford despite him being a year older and spending the whole season warming the bench, Chelsea even made a profit on Garnacho. I think it’s part of the thinking behind Chelsea’s initial spending spree - a foresight of the way the market was going (could be giving them too much credit), although not sure how it works when they’ve still paid Delap a fortune a week to do absolutely nothing.

Having said that, that would justify them getting the same price for Delap as what they paid. Has 50m really been mentioned? Bloody hell 😂

The fact he scored is probably newsworthy enough

I remember when Crouch went to Liverpool, and at that point he was a much more established PL player than Delap is, who's basically still a kid. And his (Crouch's) overall game was fine, he was contributing and playing well, the team was scoring goals, but he wasn't scoring, and it became a big thing how they'd spent a lot of money on a striker who hadn't scored yet... which of course made it more pressured for him the longer it went on.

It's not players' faults how much they cost in terms of transfer fees etc, I don't think Delap is the answer (unless the question is to name Rory Delap's son, which has more than one answer!) but I do think him being at Chelsea and costing them such a large amount to bring in doesn't help the expectations regarding him, when he's still only 23
