Reality is most of the industries where kids would first enter the workplace like retail and hospitality are struggling. The old paper round doesn't exist as a concept at all anymore.

Best option nowdays for kids is your local co-op or tesco express but it's no surprise most kids are struggling if half a class of 30 are trying for the 1 or 2 jobs they can walk to.

I didn't intend to be accusing schools for the lack of paid opportunities for school children and students.
I agree that it is about "the economic milieux" having changed out of all recognition since I was a lad.

To be fair changed since I was a lad too. When I was 16 there was tonnes of opportunities for part time casual work.

It was when I turned 18 that it all went to shit, and hasn't recovered since.

We seem to me (retired for 12 years now) to have been, and continue to be, in the throes of a new "industrial revolution", every bit as painful as the first one, and with the proles now expendable. That is why all social services are being increasingly under-funded and left to rot, increasing % of the population is living below the poverty line, while a small elite amass all the monetary and tangible asset wealth.
What disease, starvation and poisoning of water and food cannot eliminate among the proles is being taken up by elite sponsored warfare.
Homo Sapien Sapiens is basically being replaced now by Homo Sapiens Greedy Heartless f***ers.
We really are doomed, doomed and thrice doomed.

Was a bit on the radio a few weeks back where they asked people to message in if the had a Saturday job as a teenager, pretty much 90% of folks were saying Woolworths, HMV, BHS, all the places that pretty much no longer exist on a high street.

I was thinking about this the other day. But one thing I have noticed is there has never been more foreign workers in what you might call unskilled work. Where I live which was traditionally classed as a low immigration area nearly every supermarket / minimart you go in to 90% of the security are not English. If you go to the docks it is the same. If you get a parcel delivered the majority of deliveries are conducted by a non English person. If you get food delivered the same. If you go in to purchase a takeaways the same. Where I go to the gym all the cleaning staff and 50% of the waiting staff are non English.

This must have affected the youth employment market in some respect. You didn’t get kids being security guards when I was a kid (I’m not sure they were so prevalent). But certainly a lot of the starter jobs are now being done, just not by 16-20’s.
 
Best bet these days for kids jobs is the supermarkets - need to be applying now if they’ve done GCSE’s s so they’re up and running in plenty of time for Xmas. They do 12/14 hours per week contacts which are perfect whilst they’re doing A levels / college. Extra hours available in holidays and the pay is £13/h +. Parents get discounted shopping as well. Pubs / restaurants, I’ve heard a lot of horror stories - although tips can be good. With the supermarkets you know they’ll be safe.

Paper round at 12 - £1 per day, £2 sundays
Collected the money sat on Sundays for them £6 for 2 hours ish.
Summer in one of the clothing factories, then hit the jackpot - hear me out!

Then girlfriend had a job in a shoe shop in Mansfield. Shop manger asked one day if I’d be interested, so did a 4 hour shift on a sat working on the shop floor - it was shit, feet and moaning twats not for me! Manager says would you just like to do the storeroom upstairs - booking deliveries in, sending stuff back, just generally keep it tidy. That’ll do me! 4 lads worked there, 1 who was gay and 20 - 25 women, 20 of them who were 16-20. The hours I spent stood at the top of the stairs whilst they’re running up to get a box of shoes. 😍😍😍.

Oh - corona pop as well, coke was crap D a B amazing.

This is covered brilliantly in the latest Adam Curtis documentary called Shifty. Having lived through most of what he's documented, most of it rings true. His conclusion, that politicians of all persuations have lost control and can do very little to change anything. Very grim but also seems to be the case imo. They can tinker around the edges but thats about it.

Top Deck was a range of low alcohol shandy drinks marketed to children in the United Kingdom from the 1960s to the 1980s. The product was introduced by Idris & Co., who were later acquired by the Beecham Group. In 1986 the brand was sold, along with the more popular Tango and the UK franchises for Pepsi and 7-Up] to Britvic.

All three Top Deck flavours were sold in silver cans, with the initial can design based on Idris’s own Shandy product. Each flavour had a signature colour (seen as a boxout background on the first can design, later the text of that flavour).

The three flavours were:

Limeade & Lager (Green)
Lemonade Shandy (Yellow)
Lemonade & Cider (Orange)
The alcohol content was listed on the cans as less than 1.2%

The lime one was my go to. We didn't get the cider one in Ilkeston, it was probably too exotic.

I've been saying this for a while. We outsourced everything to computers and massive aggregated systems and we've found ourselves in a completely amoral world with not much chance of backing out.

At 13, I got my first part-time job while at school.
I wasn't without a part-time or full-time job from then on.
Before starting that first p/t job I had to go for a pre-employment medical at Gedling House on Main Road (I wonder if it is still there?), where a robust matronly lady with ample bosom told me to strip to my under-pants. She then weighed me, measured my height, checked my teeth, eye-sight, and then without warming she suddenly thrust her hand down the front to my pants, grabbed my testicles and told me to cough.
If it hadn't been for a young girl, I think called Shirley, who in a wood near my Granny's house had done something rather gentler and more pleasant a couple of weeks earlier, I could have been mentally scarred for life by that matron.
so in the best chronological order I can remember, my part-time jobs while at school/college/Uni were:
1 At 13 until my 18th birthday - butcher's and grocer's delivery boy with the Co-op;
2 At 18 I said goodbye to the Digby Avenue Co-op, to become a part-time barman at the Phoenix, working for Ernie and Jean;
3 Rose budder and strawberry picker at Timmermans and Shelford strawberry farm;
4 Tester of electric kettle ejectors at a factory I think was called Wirehome;
5 Stand-in runner of petrol station on Westdale Lane;
6 Lathe, press, and milling machine operator at a place on Colwick Industrial estate (left after a couple of weeks with a still unbeaten failure rate of the products I was lathing, pressing and milling);
7 Shop assistant in Mr & Mrs Bridget’s Newsagents and post office on wollaton Avenue;
8 Cafeteria worker at the Greenwich Maritime Museum for a blissful summer, in 1977;
9 Messenger boy for the London-based oil company head office (same summer);
10 Packer at a large Exeter-based commercial laundry;

Most kids these days seem unable to get regular paid part-time work, instead the schools fit them up with unpaid "work experience" for a week or so.
They come out of school with no idea how the world of paid employment is, and I think they are done a disservice by this lack of money earning opportunity before being released from the education system.

It’s probably because like you I’m a Gedling lad (County Road), but like you i went to Digby College, where I would drink in the Phoenix every lunchtime and eat their chip cobs for lunch.
My mum worked at Bridget’s on Wollaton Avenue for a while when I was a toddler in the early 70’s. I later worked for them at the shop on Westdale Lane when Chris was running the business. My Uncle also worked for Bridget’s and ran their Long Eaton shop.
My brother’s mate used to work at the petrol station on Westdale lane.

The pop place at Sawley was Carters and they moved to a new factory at Kegworth which later became Hero and then Cott (which it was when I worked there about 15 years ago. It’s now owned by Refresco but still makes pretty much the same stuff including Ben Shaws Shandy & Dandelion & Burdock - but only the bottles as cans are made in a factory near Pontefract (or were last I knew)

Aye, there's plenty of knock off Irn Bru around and most of it is fine enough! Barrs is the proper stuff though. They also make Tizer, which is similarly indefinable but nice
