The "if we go up" thread

So, if this time next season, its the top flight we're preparing for, do you think we'd be able to build a team that could keep us up? Could we build a better team than Derby's Worst Team in History?

Assume we get Mills and McSheffry. Who in the current squad would be good enough with a promotion season in the Championship under their belt? Who would never cut it?

Would Doughty be able to afford the outlay needed to keep us up there? What have the likes of Stoke and Hull spent to make it happen for them?

All of this is assuming we go up and have a good season. There's no guarantee this will happen. We've got lots of new faces, and lots of inexperienced kids, a new manager and a long way to go, but doesn't hurt to wonder what we'll be up against should it all magically "work".

Far too many unknowns to even consider answering the question.

Of course we could build a team that keeps us up, equally, we could beat Derby's record of shitness.

I'll wait and see how we start the season before I get carried away.

Hypothetically, I could see a few of our players playing in the Premiership. They have age on their side.

Cohen
Mcgugan
Earnshaw
Garner
Smith
Anderson
Majewski (not really sure but looked good against County and linked with Blackburn so maybe)
Gunter
Morgan
Moussi
Mills (if he signs)

If you add a few premiership players to that lot I think it could be the basis of a decent team. Add four players of proven Premiership quality and experience. A Keeper, defender, midfielder and striker.

Players that are available this summer like Peter Crouch, Sol Campbell, Patrick Viera and maybe Spurs would sell Cudicini now he's a reserve. Or Harper from Newcastle. If you added a few from this league like Wolves have with Surman, maybe Joe Ledley from Cardiff.

Cudicini

Gunter Mills Campbell New LB

Anderson Viera Cohen Ledley

Crouch Earnshaw/Garner

It's the sort of one that fans of other teams resurrect when we get relegated. :(

I see I should have put more "ifs" in there, and made them bold, I was only wondering, there's a chance it could happen. I acknowledge there's as much chance we could finish mid table.

Could we actually go down?! Probably if we don't sort defence out :)

We won't go down, barring an injury crisis.

This is based on the rationale that there are at least five teams with worse defences than us.

I think this is a bit silly.

What about Rooney?

That depends on firstly how well the promoted teams do, Scunny are likely to fail, Peterborough may be okay and Fester should do fine, but all could go wrong for them as we thought we would be easily fine which we werent. Then we got the teams like blackpool, plymouth, coventry who havent strengthened enough or at all. So i think we should be comfortably safe if we are down that end at all

Basically, we should at the very least, finish higher than we did last year, and it'd be nice if we did that without flirting with the drop zone ;D

If we are anywhere near the drop zone this year it will be a massive fail

I've changed my mind about Peterborough's chances. They've looked a long way from where they need to be in pre-season and have leaked goals left, right and centre. Although, admitedly they've had a flu-bug go through the entire squad, I don't believe they have enough quality in defence to survive at this stage.
