As many as 14 students dead in an elementary school shooting just right now in Texas, according to their Governor.

This is absolutely awful news, what will it take for people to wake up about gun ownership?

Americans care more about their guns than they do about their children's lives.

Until that changes this will continue to happen again and again. Awful.

It keeps happening over and over again in American schools.

Never appears to be any change.

There's never a conversation about how to resolve it.

There is actually but the powers that be are at the behest of the Gun Lobby.

Can’t do much about it.

Terrible news.
Even more terrible is the probability there will be another attempt at breaking the current Sandy Hook record for multiple school shooting deaths within a few weeks.
When will they ever learn.

‘The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791, along with nine other articles of the Bill of Rights.’

This HAS to change.

Pandora’s Box was opened too long ago.
I don’t agree with the US Gun lobby but the repeal of the 2nd Amendment alone will not prevent the lone mentally ill gunman from obtains weapons and ammunition.
It would be a start, but with 100’s of millions of weapons already in circulation, the repeal would need to be backed up by a coordinated long-term programme of enforcement, armistices, and education.
Even if that were put in place it would take decades to eradicate the problem.
But at least repeal would be a start.
The cynic in me believes it will never happen.

It's a piss-poor argument, but it's the one they use successfully every time. It'll take a long time and will be difficult to take guns out of circulation so let's not bother.

Of course if they'd started the process after Sandy Hook they'd be nearly a decade down the road of the process by now. Columbine was over 20 years ago.

Piss-poor argument it may be, but you know, and I know, and they know the 2nd Ammendment is unlikely ever to pass through the legislative process over there, and if it does it is likely the gun enthusiasts will refuse to comply.
I do wonder how many parents of children murdered in the various and numerous shootings over the years support the gun lobby and would vote against repeal of the 2nd ammendment if given the chance in a State-wide referendum.

I think perhaps the ship has sailed with changing the law, all that will happen is guns will be sold illegally without regulation and probably much cheaper and not traceable, creating an even larger problem.

It's a problem that probably doesn't have an answer outside of human beings need to be better.

Devils advocate, but how are mental health services in America? Are they easy to access? Do they cost a fortune? Are there charity subsidiaries? I genuinely don't know.

I’m not saying anybody deserves to be shot but why kill children?

Anyone who can hurt a child or an animal is the worst of the worst.

I've just read an article that perhaps answers my own question.... Texas has ammended a law allowing young adults 18-21 to buy firearms if they are classed as vulnerable to abuse etc.

So what are the usual (and stereotypical) causes of mental health issues?

I may be wrong and willing to be corrected, but if I am right that highlights a massive issue.

The second amendment was a very clever amendment in the 18th century when everyone had muskets. To overthrow tyrannical governments now you are going to need more than semi automatic weapons.

The reason in the 18th century of making sure you defend yourself again tyrannical governments was a sound argument but unless you let the population keep drone guns, RPGs, tanks and miniguns its actually pointless.

For me the second ammendment is also the biggest reason policeman in the US police the way they do. People in my opinion over egg racism far too much its the fact that policeman in the US go into every public interaction that the person they are talking to could have a gun and kill them.

Listen to Brandon Tatum an ex black US police officer he describes his police training where he is tought that every interaction could be fatal and he has to look out for signs to keep himself safe.

This is because there are guns everywhere, I would hate to be a cop in the US.

I'd hate to be anything in the US.
In fact I would hate to be in the US these days.
