Apparently when Revie was appointed as England manager he arranged for 85 players to attend a get together to discuss his plans to get England to qualify for the 1978 World Cup. One of the 85 he invited was.... John Robertson.

Needless to say he turned it down. And of course he was the only one of those invited that actually got to play in that World Cup.
I remember this very well. Despite the obvious mistake we were pleased that a Forest player was actually on England’s radar, even if it was a ‘squad’ of 85!

Several of those players subsequently played for Forest and in Duncan McKenzie’s case had already graced the
City Ground.
I didn’t actually look at the list above, so looking at it now is the first time I’ve seen it in half a century. I remember McKenzie making a more normally sized England squad when the manager (Revie, I presume) promised every player would get some minutes on the field and he was the only who didn’t.

Despite his mock indignation (Jimmy McCann still winds him up about being "really English" to this day), Robbo always took that acknowledgement from Revie as a huge, huge compliment Nicola.

I don’t think Clough rated Richardson though,Trev-and he was part of the cull that inevitably followed his arrival
at Forest.
There's no doubt that Richo could fairly-effectively man-mark Norman, but he gave me the impression that he thought himself a much better player than he actually was. It took Cloughie little time to see through that.

1973 All Ireland XI v Brazil (Dublin).
Forest’s Miah Dennehy, Martin O’Neill and Liam O’Kane line up in the first all Ireland side since the early 50’s. Arranged as a peace initiative at the height of the troubles, they ended up being forced to play under the name of Shamrock Rovers. Dougan, a Protestant from East Belfast, was never selected for Northern Ireland again.

As he was 35 when he played that game. Isn't it more likely that Northern Ireland were looking to rebuild for the next World Cup rather than as a consequence of playing in this game. There had been 4 World Cup games before that game and he had only played one I believe.

Little known fact: Pat Jennings failed to be appointed as a proctologist after he retired from professional football.

(Cue fervid Google searching by some on here, who don't quite understand the joke) :)

Gosh Miah Dennehy! Get the ball on the half way line, go on a mazy dribble all the way to the by line, no one could get near him, then dribble all the way back again!

He was a favourite of mine in his short time with Forest. I think I’ve mentioned here before that in a bored moment my brother and I once found ourselves looking for Forest players in the phone book. I was disappointed that the only Dennehy was a J Dennehy until my mum pointed out that Miah was short for Jeremiah. I was too well-brought-up and shy to actually ring the number, though.

Yes his age was no doubt a factor and he hadn’t scored for 10 games but it’s also common knowledge that the influential IFA president Harry Cavan ‘advised’ then-manager Terry Neill not to select him.

At the start of the Ireland v England Home Nations game on May 12th 1973, commentator Brian Moore said that Northern Ireland were in a transitional period so I think the chances are small that Dougan would have played for them again regardless of that July All-Ireland game.
