The demise of Southampton.....

Can't imagine "Saints" fans can be very happy with the goings on down on the South Coast...

Liverpool signed 3 players from them & in for a fourth.

Today Arsenal have signed Chamberlain, whilst Tottenham are now getting in on the act, & been reported on the BBC that they are closing in on Schneiderlin & Rodriguez...

Some fire sale this... Saints must have no financial worries, after making huge profits on players, some who have come through the ranks, or others they brought in cheaply, and sold on for good profits...

Wonder how much Soton will spend on replacement to 7-8 key members of their squad, that they will have lost over the summer!

They've still got Clyne, Fonte, Wanyama, Ward-Prowse, Cork, Hooiveld, Boruc and a few others so they've still got some decent players but they will surely struggle without all that quality they've lost. It's very sad and it shouldn't be happening.

There was certainly a concern that with Cortese out of the way the owner would cash in and it sadly looks like that is happening.

Having said that the training ground has brand new state of the art facilities and they are spreading out into the fields next door and will have over twice the training pitches they had when they've finished - So they are still planning for the future.

It could be of course, that they have some more bright young talent we don't know about. I can remember being told when the current batch of youngsters broke through into the first team that it was the group below them that they were really excited about. We'll see. I think they'll struggle and it will be saddening because what is happening to them is a prime example of all that is wrong with top flight football in this country.

It's all about mid-table...
Saints did well last season so now cash in to the richer clubs, if they're relegated so what? At least they're actually on the merry go round.

When are we getting on it? We've not been merry for many a year. :(

Chamberlain? What year is it?

Seriously it makes you laugh in the face of "fans" of Liverpool and the like when they moan about the state of the national team and youth.

They're claiming to be the makers of Lambert even though they let him go as a youngster

Same old story and basically why English football as a competition seems somewhat dull and souless these days.

Southampton have built a team over a number of years, steadily progressing and deservedly finding themselves with unprecedented success. You'd think their 8th place finish would be a stepping stone to kick on and maybe even finish a little higher next year...

...but no, the richer teams, having finally noticed the strength of their squad, just swoop in and sign all their best players.

And now they've got to start again.

No wonder my post count..
I feel bad for them. Had they kept their roster (and manager) they ended the season with and added some extra players over the summer, I'd fully expect them to finish in the top 6 at least.

That said, they've just made a humongous profit from their academy.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - if more clubs operated this way and didn't spunk so much on transfers, English football would be a much brighter place right now.

It's a f***ing crying shame there are vultures driving gold f***ing plated Range Rovers, shitting on the lot of us from up above.

Thankyou Steve!

There are some interesting reads on the Southampton forums from their Capello's....

Seems this was avoidable but the owner (Karen L?) Wanted everything cut back and wouldn't communicate plans with the manager or cortese (sp?)...

Apparently they were going to sack MP in Jan anyway and at the last min desperately tried to keep him. Much of what is happening this summer has been on the cards since Jan.

Looks like two more on there way to Spurs now. Best part of £130M sold in this transfer window.

Saints looking healthier now but needed to sell to cover their increasing debts.

I suspect their decision to sell practically all their players this window is because they're at high stock. Next season Southampton will aim for 17th and if they manage it, there decision to offload will be a good one.

What's the point in trying to build a team? Two excellent seasons in the top flight and they're back to a Championship standard squad. The money they have is cold comfort really; how can they possibly bed in 6 or 7 new signings quickly enough to be competitive?

Such a shame; there's been so much to admire about them for the past 3 or 4 seasons.

It's quite an original situation though. Owner dies, owner's daughter takes no interest and sells assets.

Brutal for their fans

They've ripped the plot off Major League.

Ultimately there's not much they can do really, clubs don't hold any power over players these days. If a player wants out he's gone, and when you're being offered the sums Southampton were you'd be daft to reject them.

Welcome to football in 2014, where the best most teams can hope for is to finish comfortably in the top 10 of the Premier League (but miles off a European place) playing football which is nice to watch with some home grown players in, before the mega-rich vultures come in and swoop. This is as good as it'll ever get.
