Tenable quiz - Football edition

I thought since I did a Pointless version a while back, I'd open a thread with a little quiz based on the TV show on the other side (though not at the same time) - Tenable.

For those who haven't seen it, contestants have to provide the answers to questions about 'top 10', 'first 10', 'only 10' on various topics (eg the 10 countries bordering Austria and/or Hungary, the last 10 winners of the French Open tennis tournament etc...)

What I thought I'd do was set two questions - one about football in general and one related to Forest, that shouldn't be easy to quickly find the answers to, and the winner can be the one who gets the most correct answers without losing two lives. You're not going to know when you have lost the first life though (unlike in the TV show) so be careful - you can submit less than 10 answers if you think that's the best policy, but make sure to submit the answers in priority order anyway (those you are most confident on at the top of the list).

In the event of a tie, the first one to post will be the winner (but someone losing zero lives will beat someone losing one life), for each question. You can answer them both but at different moments though if you like.

I'll give it until Saturday, and then look up the answers myself and announce the results.

Ok, so question 1:
Name the 10 clubs with the highest total of goals in UEFA club competitions (European Cup/Champions League excluding qualifying rounds, UEFA/Fairs Cup, Cup Winners Cup, Super Cup, and the recent Europa League stuff too)

Question 2:
Name the top 10 goalscorers for Forest in top level domestic English cup competitions (so that includes Simod/ZDS Cup etc, but not Anglo Scottish, Anglo Italian, County Cup....)

Hopefully I can find the answers and let you know who has made the best attempt at each question!

You might be influenced by other answers, but like I say the ones who answer earliest take priority.

You should give at least 5 answers on each topic though (since on the actual show 5 correct answers are needed to make it through and play the final round, which is a team round where all 10 answers are needed before everyone has given a wrong answer but that's not relevant here).

Good luck!

Maybe it's not a bad idea to add a link to the rules of the show (but the bits about nominates and over-rules etc aren't relevant - it's the losing of the life meaning that another incorrect answer ends the round which is - so for example if you do a list and your 6th answer on it is incorrect then if your 7th, or 8th, 9th or 10th one is too you'd be out of the running).

If you want to add a 10th player Steve it's fine (although obviously it increases the risk of two incorrect answers). I'll take the highest placed Grabban unless you want to let me know to take the lower placed one anyway (in terms of the order of the answers, and checking if they're correct).

I haven't got much of a clue how many of your answers will be correct at this stage (especially on the Forest question actually probably!), but I'll try to work it out by Saturday like I said.

Thanks for the answer anyway!

I'd be open to a vote on whether Charity Shield goals should count for the Forest question (I just thought about it, and there might be a case for it since I included European Super Cup goals for the other question and that is a similar game, albeit a bit more competitive/prestigious and the title does say Cup not Shield too!)).

It's worth sorting out whether they should be included or not as 'top level goals in English cup competitions' to make sure there isn't any controversy on Saturday anyway lol!

I'll go with the majority view, but exclude them if nobody offers any view. I'm not sure whether or not it'd change anything in terms of the top 10 scorers but it's possible!

Ok I’ll replace the first Lewis Grabban with Ian Bowyer, cheers

Great - shall I put Bowyer in the same position the first Grabban was in then you mean, or just remove Grabban from that place (leaving him lower down) and add Bowyer at the bottom of the list?.

I guess the order shouldn't affect how many incorrect answers are given, but it could affect how much of a run of correct answers are given at the start etc.

I wasn't sure whether Bowyer was an after thought for a really good candidate (which would be fine), or the new 10th choice so to speak.

Cheers!

I’ll remove the higher up Grabban and put Ian Bowyer just after Birtles please.
I should leave it there before I start remembering all those goals Woodcock and O’Neill scored in high scoring cup games in the late 70’s

Ok, I'll get the results posted up now....

Nicola (I'm Red Till Dead) takes the win on the Euro clubs question, & would be in a position to have one final guess to complete the 10 teams, after just one incorrect guess so far (but I may have given her a clue, after she'd posted her 10, with a comment by private message anyway!)

Steve got all the way to his 10th guess, but Arsenal cost him his second life!

Dan successfully got his 5 answers (so would make it through the round in reality, and take a thousand pounds through if it was the real show of course).

By my calculations (according to the valid goals I'm counting which includes Fairs Cup goals from 65-65 to 70-71 when qualification was achieved via league positions, as well as the first Super Cup, but not Intertoto Cup which UEFA count as goals in their competitions...like they do with the Intercontinental Cup actually but that's 50% South American so doesn't count here), Inter Milan are 11th on the list with 584 goals (253 of them in the European Cup/Champions League excluding preliminary/qualification matches), and Arsenal are 13th on the list with 558 (322 European Cup/Champions League ones).

For the Forest question you did well enough to get through the round with a thousand pounds (if you were on the show) without any help from team-mates Steve, because five of your top 6 answers were correct! But then your 7th guess (as well as 8th, 9th and 10th) wasn't!

So we're looking for one European club, and five more Forest cup scorers (I included the Charity Shield in the end otherwise 10th place would have been a 3-way tie, but have a guess at those that would have been joint 10th in that case too if you like...one Steve has mentioned already, while another one he mentioned is on the main list - so with that clue it's probably just a matter of guessing which one is which!).

Four of the Forest scorers are from quite a few years ago (one of them could have been seen on the pitch by some forum members though)! Maybe even that is not enough of a clue for one player in particular...and you might be better off just guessing names of Snooker players (you might get that answer quicker doing that!)

Clough is correct (29 top level domestic cup goals), as are Robertson (27), Pearce (25), Bowyer (21) and Birtles (17).View attachment forestcupscorerstenabletower.jpg

I did do some Tenable tower diagrams (after Nicola shared a template with me, and I filled in the correct answers), although I can't seem to upload them as attachments (the Forest one should be attached but I don't see it after submitting the post). Anyway, five spaces are empty on the Forest tower (Clough is 1st, Robertson 2nd, Pearce 3rd, Bowyer 5th, Birtles 8th). The order of the top 9 scoring clubs in Euro competitions (leaving the bottom space on the tower empty only) is Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, Ajax, Manchester United, Benfica & Ac Milan

I’ll throw in Celtic for the final Euro club, they must have even in every year since it started.

They're up there, but only 19th on the list (481 goals including 233 in the main stages of the European Cup/Champions League).

You're kind of on the right track in terms of a club that plays at home in a shirt with two main colours!

Sorry, I meant 10th place would have been a two-way tie without Charity Shield goals counting. With them counting then 11th place is a two-way tie instead though.

And I can add that two players would be on 12 goals, meaning that even without Charity Shield goals and without any players from over 100 years ago Storey-Moore doesn't quite make a top 10 on that basis either (he has 10 goals, all FA Cup). I pretty much ruled them out for the main list with other clues anyway, so I'll confirm those two on 12 goals are Steve Hodge (8 League Cup goals, 2 FA Cup, 2 Full Members Cup) and Neil Webb (5 League Cup, 4 FA Cup, 3 Full Members Cup).

Woan is on 8 goals, Francis 5, Reid 4, and Grabban only 2 actually!

Kjetil Osvold's Cat

Kingsley Black
Actually, no Charity Shield goals lol!

I realise now 10th place is settled (with another old player coming in - not the one some on the forum may have seen then, who misses out)!

Robertson is notched down to 26 goals in that case, but stays 2nd on the list.

So four old-timers required, plus someone Steve has already mentioned.

Nicola has already got two of the old-timers (helping me spot that we have 10 players without Charity Shield goals included in the process - I'd heard of this player but hadn't spotted he had enough FA Cup goals, although I was checking thoroughly with a good source so we should have it correct now).
