Temitayo Olufisayo Olaoluwa Aina of NIGERIA!

I've had a quick look online but couldn't find an immediate answer so wondered if anyone here knows.

I know that the PL squad is reset at the end of the January window. But does that mean that for the duration of the window effectively we can play whoever we want prior to the final squad being decided, or does "one in, one out" apply straight away?

I thought it was open season, so Aina (and others) could just play straight away when he's fit without us needing to decide who he replaces until the end of the window, but I couldn't find anything obvious confirming that. Anyone got a definitive answer (apologies if covered in this thread previously)?
Free for all I think. I can’t find anything specific but Emmanuel agbadou signed for wolves on Jan 8th and made his debut on the 15th last season.
So I guess we can drop boly from the squad to add aina straight away?

Well that was my query, do we have to drop someone immediately (such as Boly) or not? I know Aina can definitely come straight in but I want to know if that has to be at someone else's immediate expense or whether it only matters at the end of the window when the final squad is decided. Boly to Aina is obvious regardless but there will be others to consider.

It only matters at the end of the window,up until then anyone can play.

Happy days. I thought that was the case but couldn't see confirmation.

I guess the only other consideration is the whole two club maximum in one season, but only relevant to returning loanees who we might want to loan out again to another club, so couldn't play for us. Not a big deal.

Transfer windows are just registration windows, you are allowed to register & unregister who you want at any point when they are open.

An example was in August 23', when we had Mbe Soh, Cafu & Lyle Taylor all on the bench in the first few games but as soon as the squad was confirmed they were never involved again.

I can't find any recent examples in January though as it is quite rare.

So for arguments sake, we could add Aina, any returning loanee and any new signing, without deregistering anyone, even though that takes us above 25 (ignoring the kids), as long as the squad at the end of the window complies with the rules? Sweet.

A quick look at the PL handbook suggests that... (and -disclaimer - conclusions after running it through AI)

You can submit a new list on January 1 when the window opens having swapped players in and out. So Aina could replace Boly from then and be eligible to play

You can continue to resubmit revised lists during the window but at each junction you can only have 25 players of 21 years or more. So you can't add people without taking players away. The list then frozen at the end of the window

I suppose in practice that means in practice you could keep adding new players in January, say two to replace Yates and Wood who are injured. But then need to decide whether you include Wood and Yates at the end of the window and if so, who misses out

If you want to be technical about it - we still need to be within the 25.

But during the January transfer window, we can make unlimited changes to the 25 ie do so on a per-match basis as needed. So it effectively becomes irrelevant.

Cheers, folks, very useful. Doubt it'll make much difference in practice but interesting that we can mix and match a bit for a month (if we actually have a surplus of eligible players) before nailing the squad list down. Does make sense.

Scarpa. We played him as soon as we could even though we had a 25 man squad.

Too many rules and regs these days. I've spent a lot of the afternoon trying to prove I'm who I say I am, now I have to worry about 25 man squads. It's all too much, I tell you.
No 'Poodle you've spent the afternoon trying to convince yourself who you are. If you've succeeded well done. As my mother used to say " Go to the top of the class and give out pencils"

Would anyone be surprised if Ola is in the starting 11 against Villa.
Possibly

I think once the window has opened the rule is that we still have to keep a 25 but can make unlimited changes to it until the window closes. But a matchday squad can be 20 so there will always be 5 missing out completely whether they are injured, suspended or just not picked.

I'm just not convinced that Aina would be fit enough to play a PL match when he's maybe played what 2/3 this season and was struggling towards the end of last, and the first start would be Villa, who have currently won their last 11 matches, I know he's played for the reserves a couple of times but playing kids isn't the same really.

Savona is not the same class as Aina, even though players get more ability when they are out injured, but he is not a mug and for a young player in his first season in England he is doing really well.

I would imagine once Dyche decides Aina is fit enough again he will be on the bench and coming on for about 20/30 at the end then after a couple of times doing that he'll be starting.

Dyche doesn’t strike me as a ‘change your full backs for 20/30 mins for no reason’ kinda guy to me!! We are back to Europa league and fa cup in January so should be opportunity to give Williams a break. Could see Aina slotting in there. Or maybe he comes on further forward?

I just think he's a key player for us so he would be our starting full back even though Williams and Savona have done nothing wrong but then yes Williams is still on that yellow card tightrope. It wouldn't be like bringing on a new player or a player not used to the system or the way we play, because he hasn't played for us under Dyche but he has played in a similar tactical setup under Cooper and Nuno for us, and the players around him are still largely the same.

But it is a big ask for him to have not played for us since September to all of a sudden be in the team against 3rd in the league who have won 11 in a row and play 90 minutes, when they would be more likely easing him in some way, 90 minutes when he hasn't played for a while in the PL is quite intense and chances are he probably wouldn't last it first time, and then he'd need to come off (and perhaps have to play on for a few minutes whilst he needs to) and then they would need to change the full backs anyway. It wouldn't be necessarily for "no reason" because getting minutes into your first choice FB who's been out for a while is a good enough reason really.
