Teams of the Past; Who Would Win?

Here's a mildly interesting thing to wonder about. Would our promotion winning side of a few years ago beat the current Notts team?

Nottm Forest: Smith, Chambers (Breckin 72), Morgan, Wilson, Bennett, Perch (Agogo 65), McGugan, Cohen, Commons, Ormerod (Davies 86), Tyson.
Subs Not Used: McCleary, Thornhill.

Here's the Notts squad up to now, not sure how they'd line up though.

GK Rob Burch, Stuart Nelson, Dávid Gróf
DF Mike Edwards, Graeme Lee, John Thompson (captain), Krystian Pearce, Liam Chilvers, Stephen Hunt
MF Ricky Ravenhill, Neal Bishop, Ben Davies, John Spicer, Jon Harley, Matt Marshall
FW Kevin Smith, Lee Hughes, Karl Hawley, Luke Rodgers, Craig Westcarr, Ben Burgess

And another interesting one I thought of, how would our team of this season fair against the D*rby side that were relegated?

Derby: Carroll, Todd (Mears 89), Leacock, Moore, Lewis, Sterjovski, Ghaly, Savage, Jones, Miller (Earnshaw 36), Villa.
Subs Not Used: Price, Feilhaber, Beardsley.

8 of those in the Forest team played a part in our Championship 3rd place season.

I reckon they'd rape Notts.

In terms of teams fo the past, who would win?

Forest mid 80s (Clough/Clough) or Forest mid 90s (Clark/Collymore).

Well spotted. Ormerod just went up with Blackpoo and Commons plays in this league, although he's fat. Then again, they weren't as good back then, which is what you have to think, not what they are now.

Forest mid 80s (Clough/Clough) or Forest mid 90s (Clark/Collymore).

You would have to go for The Forest of Wembley Wembley (88-90) v Forest of the mid 90's (94-96).

Sutton - Crossley
Laws - Lyttle
Pearce - Pearce
Walker - Cooper
Wilson - Chettle
Hodge - Phillips
Carr - Stone
Webb - Bohinen
Parker - Woan
Clough - Roy
Chapman - Collymore

It's a toughie, the 80's had 5 England international's playing, a stronger keeper and back four and a more consistent midfield, where as the 90's had the skill of Roy and the pace and strength of SCV...........

Forest 80's 3 (Pearce 2(1pen), Webb)
Forest 90's 2 (Collymore 2)

Interesting too Rich that those 8 who played in a team which struggled to get out of the league below, playing some truly dreadful stuff could have performed so well last season playing some of the nicest football in the Garibaldi in years. Just shows what a bit of confidence can do for you.

It also shows how a few key additions can change not only the team, but individual players.

How much of an influence on those players has McKenna been, for example?

Craig, I think the 90's team edges it. The 80s had 5 England players, but the 90s team had 6 internationally capped players (Crossley, Pearce, Stone, Bohinen, Roy, Collymore).

I think Crossley was a better keeper than Sutton, and both team had Pearce.

The front line was more exciting, and more dangerous, with Collymore and Roy. They could literaly produce a goal out of nothing. They were of an era where they were starting to look after their physicality, too. Athleticism was becoming important throughout the 90s, so I think the mid nineties team would be able to out run the late 80s team.

For me, 2-1 to the 90s.

Like I said Rich, very close to call, however, I don't think 'Norm' had been capped by then, other than for England u.21's, Stone was only capped half way through 95/96, Collymore wasn't capped until the last week of his time at Forest, although Phillips was a Welsh international.

The 5 Forest lads were all regular England players (not so much in NLN's case though), Sutton and Laws had played England 'B' and Psycho and Des were probably playing their best football at that time, the other thing to factor was that NLN was grabbing 20 a season on a regular basis, and Webb and Hodge would way in with more from Midfield than the 90's lads. SVC vs Des would have been interesting to watch though!

There's other factors, though. The backpass rule chaged everything about Des's game. He used to beat a defender and knock the ball back. This stopped with the back pass rule.

Would the game be played with it or without it?

I still fancy the team of the 90s, but then again, that's my era. That's my Forest. Someone older than us will come on here, I'm sure, and tell us that the team of the 70's was better for so many reasons.

For me, the 90s team was the greatest Forest team ever, and had we kept Collymore we would have won the Premierleague.

Damn that's a good one. Though Hodge, Webb, Parker and Clough were are lovely players I think Cooper and Collymore are the extra quality that edges it for the 90s.

I actually always thought how good it would have been to have Nigel playing just behind Stan, the vision and the ability that Nigel had to hold the ball up would have benefited Stan's game greatly, and opposition defences would have been terrified of playing against the pair.

If only Brian had given in and signed SVC in March 1993 instead of Big Bad Bob.

What a cracking thread!

Here's another one - how would the '79 European Cup winning team get on against the 80s and 90s teams? or against last season's Championship Team?

Shilton
Anderson
Clark
McGovern (C)
Lloyd
Burns
Francis
Bowyer
Birtles
Woodcock
Robertson

Now *that* would be a game or two worth watching!

the 91 early 92 season side would have looked something like this, which aside from the euro 79 side would take the others i reckon.
Crossley
Charles
Walker
Chettle
Pearce
Keane
Crosby
Parker
Woan
Clough
Sherringham

I still think any team with SVC in it would win the day. This was a team who struck fear into the heart of anyone.

Even Forest as European Champs couldn't have been as intimidating as Collymore.

That team would probably be 5th in my list, after 77-80, 88-90, 94-96 and 83-84.

Crossley, Charles and Woan were relatively early on in their careers, as was Keane but he was a different class even then, Crosby by this point was a one-trick pony who had been found at by this stage of his career, Chettle and Woan were constantly vying for their places with Tiler and Black respectively, and Parker - who for me was better on the left anyway - moved on to Villa in October 1991 and was replaced by Scot Gemmill who had a good first season (91/92) but drifted out for a few years.

Thinking about it even Teddy was new to top flight football, and during the 91/92 season when any of Pearce Des and Nige were out injured we looked nothing more than a mid table team.

If you could take one player from their prime from Forest's past, and play them this season, who would it be?

... that might be decided quickly :)

Brett Williams - he's a left back

Stuart Pearce, easy choice.

But, with Kenny Burns standing on his achilles at every set piece, how long would it take for Stan to get himself sent off for lamping somebody?
