The planning starts now...

Players almost certainly leaving: Carl Jenkinson (released), Gaeten Bong (released), Tobias Figueiredo (released), James Garner (end of loan/not retained), Djed Spence (end of loan/not retained)
Players that will probably be leaving: Jordan Smith (released), Harry Arter (free to Australia), Brennan Johnson (sold), Cafu (sold), Lyle Taylor (sold), Nicholas Ioannou (sold)
Players that could go either way: Lewis Grabban (released), Phillip Zinkernagel (end of loan/not retained), Kienan Davis (end of loan/not retained), Max Lowe (end of loan/not retained).

That would leave Forest with the following at the absolute minimum:

Samba
Worrall Cook McKenna
Laryea Yates Colback Panzo
Lolley Mighten
Surridge

Bench: Hovarth, MBE Soh, Panzo, Ojeda, Back, Fornah, D.Taylor

But potentially it could be:

Samba
Worrall Cook McKenna
Laryea Yates Colback Lowe
Zinkernagel
Surridge Davis

Bench: Hovarth, Mbe Soh, Panzo, Ojeda, Fornah, Lolley, Mighten.

Looking at both eventualities then I think it's quite clear what we need and don't need.

Areas that don't need addressing:
1) Centre backs. Absolutely fine.
2) Centre midfield. Probably OK with Yates, Colback, Fornah and Ojeda. That's got good quality and depth, although we might want to push boat out for a Garner replacement if right player becomes available.
3) Goalkeepers. Absolutely fine.

Areas that needs addressing:
1) Absolute dearth of quality and depth in behind the striker, with only Zinkernagel any good. I like Mighten, but he really is an out and out wide left player, and because we'll probably play 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1 more often next season, the likelihood is Mighten goes out on loan. Lolley issue is obvious, lack of form, inability to stay fit. I think we'll need at least two advanced midfield players brought in, three if Zinkernagel isn't retained.
2) Question marks over the wing backs. Laryea might not be good enough, and if we don't get Lowe in then we'll need another LWB as shoehorning in either Panzo or Colback doesn't feel right.
3) Probably need another striker, maybe someone a bit more nippy.

Over you to LTLF to start choosing your advanced midfielders (hi Jed Wallace), striker and wing backs...

Edit: Obviously threat title should read 2022.

Re: Summer 2023 Transfer Window

I'd be surprised if Worrall was still here next season, though if we get a good enough fee for Johnson we might be able to keep Joe for another year. If he goes he'll need replacing (unless Mbe Soh or someone from the academy steps up).

I'd like another midfielder to replace Garner, though whether we need one perhaps depends on how Fornah and Ojeda get on and whether they have the attributes to fill Garner's boots.

Lowe will need signing or replacing. Perhaps someone who can cover for Laryea and Lowe/ the new LWB too.

A striker (or two if Grabban leaves) is essential. I'd quite like us to sign Davis permanently. Signing Zinckernagel (or a decent alternative) and a replacement for Johnson is vital too.

Busy summer ahead.

Re: Summer 2023 Transfer Window

There seems to be a fair few contracts up so if we are talking frees and we don't go up, I think we could do worse than Pukki, Ben Johnson from West Ham, Tymon from Stoke and obviosuly Wallace too.

Not sure internationally but one I thought looked excellent is Magnus Kofod Anderson who looks like he could replace Garner but is linked like all of our targets seem to be at present to Fenerbahce.

Re: Summer 2023 Transfer Window

Think Worrall would have gone by now if there was serious PL interest. We've had him priced at 8 figures+ for at least two years now, no one has bitten. The older he gets the less "unrealised potential" there is and the less likely it is a club comes up with that 8 figures for him.

He might fancy another year trying to get us up if he feels we're really close as well. Obviously wasn't the case last summer when we'd just finished 18th or whatever it was and had no identity or realistic thought of breaking top six.

I hope so. Yesterday shows that we are a much better team when he's in it, and I've no doubt that he'd love to captain this club to promotion.

Could Mighten fill the role of a more nippy striker? Think a nice long pre-season could help him learn the role.

John Swift is out of contract in Summer he’s a player I’d like to see here, but may get a better offer from the prem.

Edit: Obviously if we don’t go up

Theres no way Mighten can play as a striker in our system where he would be playing as a lone 9 (see the Lyle Taylor thread for a dissection of that). He would fit into the current model of 3-4-3 in the Brennan role as a sort of outside forward/winger but that's a different beast entirely. I've said it many times that the key to success playing this formation is getting the wingbacks so far forward they are wingers-then the "inside forwards" go narrower to support the 9-to do that you have to have control/parity in central midfield. Which is exactly what we did yesterday-it was a textbook execution of that system. If we do that I could see Mighten doing pretty well.

....on the wider issue of the summer window. Its going to be a massive window for us-wholesale change. I would imaging the starting 11 in the first game of next season will be very different-I would think at least 6 changes to the current 11, possibly more. Dane and his mob will be working their balls off I have no doubt but its going to be hard to integrate all of that and get it right...

There's no way you can plan for the summer window yet. You'll have to know in which category you'll be playing first.

No but I hope they a plan for both scenarios.

Jumping about 1000 steps ahead, it would be interesting to see how we would approach our first season back in the top division for 24 years from a transfer and budgeting perspective.

I actually think Forest in the top flight is quite a bit draw. Certainly bigger than Watford, Burnley or Norwich and alike. I suspect though we would be sensible with our budget rather than spunking £100m in a desperate attempt to stay up. If it happens, I'm hoping somewhere middle of the road with regards not risking it all but having enough to make us competitive. Anyway, will be a nice problem to have come May :)

If we fail to gain promotion this season(the most likely scenario),I think a lot of supporters expect us to
be a major contender next season.
It’s not that clear cut to me-should we remain in the 2nd tier then most(if not all)of our successful loans
won’t be returning and it’s more or less certain Johnson will leave and possibly Worrall also.
This will mean Murphy and Cooper will have to bring in 7 or 8 suitable replacements and weld them into a team
quickly-not an easy task.
We could do with promotion this season whilst we have the momentum-but I think our shocking start will be a
source of major regret come May.

I have a funny feeling that the list is not remarkably different for whichever league we are in next year.

they have to plan for either scenario

When in one scenario you have to rebuild a team with very limited funds available and in the other scenario you have a multi-million war chest, both scenarios are theoretical exercises. Yes, of course Murphy and the scouting team will be making these theoretical exercises, but, at this point, they don't mean much.

You are correct with your assumptions and its worrying and just too add to it could Cooper and his staff be tempted away.

I think we can, we just need two plants - one for being in the Premier League, the other for the Championship

I've seen them both, ones a geranium and the other is a cactus.

If Forest are in any way sensible then the approach after promotion should be to be very cautious with spending, assume relegation and thus build a side capable of getting promoted again at the first ask, using that premier League season to gel. Them all together and get those who are young some serious experience against the best players.

If we stay up then great, but if we go down at least we're ready to challenge right away and if worse case scenario that falls apart too, then at least theres still a tonne of money left that can be deployed over the next few seasons of another rebuild is needed.

Forest have a habit of breaking up good sides-1966/67,1994/95,2002/3 and 2009-11(even the European Cup side was
broken up too early).Much of this was avoidable.
Strangely, this time we may be a victim of our own success in the loan market(which we seem to have used well for
the first time I can recall).
As for Cooper-he is obviously hot property at the moment and could become disillusioned if he is left with
players of a lesser ability than the current squad.

I very much hope that Cooper will stay and finish the job that he started.

If Cooper does go, which God forbid, I would like us to consider Steven Reed. He showed talent in winning the game after Hughton left and will have learned a lot subsequently from working with Cooper.

We could do with promotion this season whilst we have the momentum-but I think our shocking start will be a
source of major regret come May.

It was the "shocking start" that hastened the arrival of a progressive young head-coach though Cloughie. My guess is that had we got off to an average start under Hughton we'd still be treading water in lower mid-table at best and arguing on here about replacing him.

First Team Squad
If we're still in the championship, we can probably bank on getting 4-5 really good loan signings again. Cooper's reputation and the positive impact all our loans have had this season has got to have Forest at the top of the destinations for Premier League youngsters.
