Like others have said, it all depends on what division we are in next season but I think you can safely assume is it isn't the Prem at least Worrall and Johnson will be gone, as well as the successful loans like Garner (they will either want him involved or at a higher level), Zink (Watford could easily be a league rival), Spence (moved on to a Prem team), Lowe is probably the only one who could reasonably stay but they have changed manager there and Davis who may be priced out depending on how he performs.

Then some of the older players are out of contract, Grabban and Colback stick out there.

It all depends on how we invest the money. Could Cooper want to raid Swansea for Matt Grimes to replace Garner? Jamal Lowe hasn't had the best of seasons, if they go up could he be a Johnson replacement? Swift for Zink? Then there is also Jed Wallace. Reason I mention these is because they don't fit the MO but are the sort of top end Championship players that could see you promoted.

Yates Grimes
Wallace Swift Lowe
Surridge

Doesn't look too bad to me .

As sad as it will be to lose Johnson (and potentially Worrall), I have faith in the club to use the money from any sales wisely. We've made great strides getting rid of expensive deadwood too, which gives us further financial wiggle room.

Whatever division we are in next season, we are in good hands.

If Forest are in any way sensible then the approach after promotion should be to be very cautious with spending, assume relegation and thus build a side capable of getting promoted again at the first ask, using that premier League season to gel. Them all together and get those who are young some serious experience against the best players.

If we stay up then great, but if we go down at least we're ready to challenge right away and if worse case scenario that falls apart too, then at least theres still a tonne of money left that can be deployed over the next few seasons of another rebuild is needed.

And this of course is the other side of parachute payments-although we all complain I also remember the sinking feeling that came with every relegation knowing we were going to be asset stripped of every decent player. There were always several reasons for this of course but finance was always number 1.
I always felt that every promotion sowed the seeds of trouble as it led to an eviseration of a success side and more importantly sides with identity.
At least you have a chance of persuading players to stay with parachute payments

It was the "shocking start" that hastened the arrival of a progressive young head-coach though Cloughie. My guess is that had we got off to an average start under Hughton we'd still be treading water in lower mid-table at best and arguing on here about replacing him.
Absolutely,Otis-but it seems such a shame that we appear destined for a major personnel change in the summer.
Unless of course,we miraculously achieve promotion and could possibly sign the likes of Spence and Davis along
with retaining Johnson and Worrall.

If we're still in the championship, we can probably bank on getting 4-5 really good loan signings again. Cooper's reputation and the positive impact all our loans have had this season has got to have Forest at the top of the destinations for Premier League youngsters.

All depends.

We have put lots of bids in for players we didn't get over the past few windows.

So the money is clearly there. I think we will see a more successful summer next year at landing the targets, both manager and recruitment teams feet will be well under the door and more players will want to join whatever happens between now and July.

John Swift is out of contract in Summer he’s a player I’d like to see here, but may get a better offer from the prem.

Edit: Obviously if we don’t go up

Lots of good players are out of contract.

Swift, Wallace that we have looked at before.

Brereton, Buchanan, Bowler (but all have clauses for extention I believe?), Osborn, Kristian Pederson, David Brooks, Derby's entire team, James Bree, Josh Tymon, Adebajo from Luton (the massive bloke).

I think going forward we will see a lot of top players just move for frees and take transfer fees themselves as a signing bonus. At the top level there is unbelievable players that are running their contracts down.

We spent about £4.5m in January and tried to bring in more in addition to that, so we definitely seem to have some money to spend. My impression is that they club isn't afraid to spend money, but nowadays isn't willing to go above a set maximum of what they think a player is worth (and that is a good thing).

I think money is available but FFP needs to be considered.

The Carvalho money is largely off FFP now. Signed in the 2018-2019 season, amortised payments will have been about £2.5m per year. By summer transfer window we'll be in the 22/23 season and the three year carry of FFP will be £0, £1.25m and £2.5m.

We sold Cash for £15m last year, that'll be on FFP and the year before that it was Appiah and Osborn.

All in all I think there's been a net profit of about £3m on player sales over the last three years, so add that to the £39m FFP carry for £42m and then remove 3x £10m annual losses, maybe a bit more for COVID, and you'll probably find we've got about £4m-8m left in FFP wiggle room going into summer...

It's interesting that Cooper was offered the chance to add more players to the squad but he declined. That says to me that he is in tune with ensuring there is a squad size that can be kept happy, that he thinks we have enough quality here to get the job done and possibly to leave a clear pathway for current players to come in to the team.

I just love everything about this guy.

We won’t have to worry about FFP this year, if we don’t go up Joe and Brennan will be off giving the club about 30m in the process. Add to that potential sell on clauses for Cash and Brereton we could have a lot to spend this summer even if most of said money goes back into the running costs of the club.

I still believe that our finances are in a much better position than most people think, especially when we get the last few members of the bomb squad off the wage bill.

IF and that's a big if we do get promoted , our transfer list would be of a higher caliber. Is jed wallace premiership standard ? Who knows, probably a bit too early to plan for premiership , we have to break into the top six first.

There's always a balance. You bring in more players inevitably it means players missing out on match days, and the more that happens the more they can become bad influences in the dressing room.

There aren't really any areas Forest are short on at the moment. We've got good first choice options in every position and capable backups to cover pretty much all eventualities. The only reason we should have brought in more players is either:

1) Because they were a significant upgrade on what we already had.
2) Because they're being lined up to replace an outgoing player in summer and we've front-run it to get them settled at the club/city well in advance of next season starting.

Could Mighten fill the role of a more nippy striker? Think a nice long pre-season could help him learn the role.

I think Mighten needs a loan similar to Johnson last year. He has talent but is still very raw, give him 6 months in league one to grow then have another look at him.

As the loan window is now shut, he won't be going anywhere this season - so we might as well have another look at him when he comes back from injury. He could be a good option in the 2nd striker/winger hybrid role that we've deployed Grabban in at times, but if he doesn't look ready, then I'd agree with getting him out somewhere for 6 months next season.

Interesting stuff Bryan. Any particular preferences of yours on that list?

No worries Otis.

Twine is the obvious stand-out. Best player in L1. Can play in a front 2, behind a front or wide. Goals, assists, creativity. Jack Rudoni similar but probably less likely to play part of a front 2.

I guess it depends what we looking for.

Ogbenie is a beast of a ball-carrier from wing-back & just got into the Ireland team.

Harry Darling is a ball-carrying CB that could replace Worrall.

Someone is going to take another risk on Cirkin & they are going to get rewarded. All-round technical quality, decent mover & lovely left-foot.

Stewart is more of a target-man CF so probably not on our radar but can see a Champ club going for him.

Sykes,Brannagan, Twine and Hardie for me. Not sure on contact status of the last three but if not expiring then none will come 'cheap'. Sykes contact us expiring and would be a good backup to Cook and a good replacement for Figgy. Cheaper, 6'5 monster who cash be moulded to our game.

Does Cafu stay for the odd cameo because of his dynamism? Can't see it. So replacing him and Garner is a big transfer in the summer whatever league we are in.

Wonder if we do look to this league Paddy Lane might be the better option with his extra dynamism over Brannagan who is a decent technician.

Lane's left-footed as well.

Paddy Lane, Fleetwood. Excelling since making the jump from the 7th tier of English football with Hyde to League 1. Versatile can play as an 8,10 and winger. He’s creative + a great dribbler & ball carrier. Certainly will have eyes watching his development from above.
