Striker search

It's an interesting question, because nowadays we have the funds, manpower, technology etc. to have a dossier on every single striker in each of the top 10 (at least) leagues on the planet.

It should be pretty obvious what Premier League attributes are - strength, mental fortitude, tenacity, and so on. Aguero always springs to mind when I think of someone born to play over here.

I'd love to get a peak behind the curtain at what the recruitment team gets up to, as I feel like I could do a better job than half of them sometimes, as I imagine we all do.
Here you go…

If its true that Chelsea are looking to offload Delap I think he's worth a punt
My knee jerk response to that idea was no effing way - but then I pondered, presuming he stays fit he's a big, aggressive bullying striker who stays central - hits instinctively with the minimum of touches .... quite Wood-like. It's not hard to think that Chelsea is the problem for him, not the other way round, so I'd actually be open to it.

Apparently Everton ready to bid 30m for him.

Apologies in advance, I know I probably bore some people rigid with my striker talk but it's the one area I can at least talk about with some experience and I pay closest attention to detail on.

How the hell has it come to this? I never thought I'd be making a thread about having to find at least one decent striker. An issue which extends back to January 2025.

My concern here is that I don't think the club have a clue what they're doing. I think we got somewhat fortunate with Woody and caught lightening in a bottle. Taiwo is really poor overall footballer as a footballer, Jesus isn't a goalscorer and I haven't got a clue what I'm looking at with Lucca.

It all points to people within the recruitment department who haven't got a clue what they are looking for. It's such a specific role and it's time that they sought some professional experience of the role to help them. Grabban would've been ideal to give some input and help compile a shortlist.

If you look at a Brentford they find some real quality forward players they must have a great scouting network and recruitment team - it seems common sense to me you go out and try and get some of those recruitment team members to come here - pay them more than Brentford and get them in look at Thiago cost £30m 17 goals this year!

The Lucca signing was a mad one - could not get a kick at Napoli - I would have gone for JSL I know the money was way over the top for him but I tell you what he scores in that 6-1 chance we had against Wolves and we win that game and even if he just got 5-6 goals that could be be the difference that keeps us up. I imagine a Grabban would be ideal to consult on a short list of strikers.

Brentford passed on Kali and Hutch and went for Ouattara we spent what £70m on 2 players one is on loan now and has 0 EPL goals the other has 1 goal Ouattara has 5 goals and 5 assists the base fee was £37.5m!!! Again he had EPL experience but we went for Kali!!!

How are Edu and the current recruitment team still employed??? At this point a think a couple of forum members could have done a better job on recruitment this season than our actual recruitment team maybe saved EM some money and got some actual talent in and players who can score goals.

So how many have you recommended to League clubs that have gone on to be successful in the league?

Edu would have said to Marinakis that it's the managers not getting the best out of the players that's the problem, not the players themselves.

A narrative which I'm pretty convinced he employs some people to parrot on here. 😆

Depends how you weight success. Some of them are still very early in their careers and most still have to go through the academy system rather than already being first team pros.

I've got approximately 8/9 so far, some of which have gone abroad and another 3/4 that in the system that I think will have a career.

If Kalimuendo and Hutchinson had signed for Brentford would we have "passed " on them? It could well be that they wanted them yet the players chose to come here.

We should be after similar players to Brentford, this is a good thing. Had they signed Kalimuendo he wouldn't now be playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, that's for sure.

Shots not on target are not the manager's fault of course.

Sometimes you just never know. Different position I know but look at Semenyo. He was decent at Bristol City but you'd never have him pegged to rise like he has.
Hes someone whose physical size has translated well to playing in the top flight. That, and his positioning is top class, so he can always get on the end of those half chances.

I don’t rate him and don’t like the way he plays - dirty, cowardly.
I agree, I watched a Chelsea game recently where he started and he was poor, all about trying to bully, dark arts and very little finesse, he was swapped for Jao Pedro and the difference was ridiculous, one of those who is a bit too good for the championship but shown up by prem defenders

On Hutchinson Brentford refused to pay the asking price. We then decided to pay the asking price. Pretty sure most on here agreed at the time it seemed madness how much we played for Hutchinson.

They also would have been integrated him slowly into the first team over a season or 2 even as he is clearly not EPL ready. He only plays now because the rest of the signing we made are very poor in my view.

On Kali they also refused to pay anything close to what they we paid. I don’t think we will ever know if he could have made a difference here. Often players become seen as world class when they are sat on the bench or leave. I don’t think we will ever know on Kali. But it seems madness we shipped him off when we are the second worst for goals in the EPL.

As much as I love the club from top to bottom it’s been a basket case this year. EM, Edu the players the recruitment team all have played a part. I just hope we can somehow stay up and reset in the summer.

With a shake of the head and a long sigh, Edu strikes the Ayatollah's name from his list this morning. The hunt for a new striker continues.

sam surridge has done very well for himself in mls, always felt we sold him too early and too cheaply Might lack a bit physicality and lack of pace but he does know where the goal is.

On the subject of comparing our current crop to the guys from the past … one note of caution; in the late 70, all through the 80’s and into the early 90’s, then again into the mid / late 90’s we were in the top flight.
Personally I think, having seen them all through that time any of; Peter Withe, Tony Woodcock, Duncan MacKenzie, Gary Birtles, Trevor Francis, Nigel Clough, Lee Chapman, Stan Collymore and PVH would make our team significantly better today. Kevin Campbell too ….
I didn’t see Joe Baker or ISM play for us but I’m sure they’d be in the same bracket.

I think that’s why those of us who have seen all of these quality of players actually play really struggle to see how anyone with half a footballing brain could possibly look at someone like Lucca and actually think he’s a footballer 🤷🏻‍♂️
In addition the strikers that played for us, predominantly in the Championship (Assambalonga and Grabban), I struggle to rate as highly as the guys I named above.
We never finished outside the top 8 or 9 all through the 80’s, in the top flight, to my memory and went to Wembley seemingly every other week.

That said we got a few wrong in the past too e.g. Fashanu, Bannister, Silenzi to name a few!

I don’t think we would have sold him had a lot of the other “in case of relegation” signings been sold. I think we’d have kept hold had we been able to find buyers for people like Panzo and that winger that could only ever play for Blackpool and oly.
