Stone & Woan roaming the wings

Yesterday against Bolton for me showed what a pairing we have with Antonio & Burke, it reminded me of the last great combination we had.

I know Burke is coming to the end of his career, but if between them they can keep this level of play who knows what the future can hold for us...with the likes Pato etc waiting to step up to the plate

Ian Woan. The first forest player I remember with a serious lack of effort.

But a sweet touch.

I almost felt sorry for Bolton yesterday; our 'wingers' were almost unplayable and we attacked in waves.
True. Used to do my head in sometimes though. I put more in getting to the ground than he did in the following 90 mins. Considering he was ex semi pro I never figured he would get away with it in that league.

Woan , lazy git but has a sweet left foot. He played like he has a elastic cord around his waist that prevented him from running too much either way before it snaped him back to the middle.

When he broke through, he replaced one of the few overpriced duds under Clough; Kingsley Black.
I don't know what happened to Black. He was very good at Luton.

People used to say John Robertson was lazy too.

Lovely seeing 2 wingers causing so much danger for the opposition. Still shudder at seeing Paul Anderson running towards at his own goal with the ball.

We are cloning Burkes now. Don't worry about it.

Thing about Burke , he's only 31 , believe he still got 3 more years in him at this level. Pace has never been his forte so losing whatever little pace he has is fine. Nicky Southall was like 35 when he scored that hat trick against swindon I think.

He is quite pacey, but his trickiness is what rips opponents to shreds. We only need him for one more season at this level. Don't we?

Burke is definitely faster than he looks. I remember Cohen saying in pre-season Burke was one of the fastest players. I agree though, his intelligence is much more useful than his pace.

I remember Cohen matched Burke for pace when he was playing for Cardiff against forest years back and let's be honest , Cohen is not exactly a pacy player.

Sylvan Distin is about 36 and he's still fast in a straight forward foot race. His most important quickness is the couple of yards where he fakes/drops a shoulder then comes inside and creates some space for himself. I don't think he'll lose that too much.

Re: Steve Stone, probably my all time favourite player.

There's a huge difference between running with a ball and just running in a straight line as fast as you can.

I suspect when saying Burke is one of the fastest, it would have been during sprint training.

It's the keeping under control that's the tricky bit. Knowing when to get it out your feet. And knowing when to keep it close.
Ryan Giggs is one of the very very few players who is/was as quick running with a ball than he was without it.

Between 93-95 Woan was close to international level - travesty he was never picked really considering the competition.

What Chris Burke has is the intelligence as to where to make his run, as well as a turn of pace.

He absolutely turned Bolton's #27 inside out and upside down yesterday and the poor lad eventually got the hook by Lennon as Burke was tormenting him.

Good to see both wingers tearing their respective full backs a new arsehole. We are so much more dangerous with both attacking high up the field and actually getting bodies in midfield in the box when they cross.

My only disappointment from yesterday was not at least seeing Ollie Burke on the bench. He could learn a lot from watching his namesake. As someone said in this thread its not just about pace. Its about intelligence too. Knowing when to attack, knowing when to play a simple ball, knowing when to attack or cross etc. I think Burke junior has a great mentor in Burke and Reid for that matter.

Hearing folk call Woan lazy is like hearing them call Bruce Lee small, or Noel Gallagher a poor guitarist. Point and purpose missed on so many levels.
This us why Freedman was a bit of a masterstroke by Fawaz, because his style fits our current squad very well.

Hopefully, if things carry on well under Dougie then promotion could be a realistic possibility next season, that's if we don't pull off a miraculous great escape and get into the playoffs this season! If we got there we'd be by far the in form team by bridging that 12 point gap! Our games from now right up to the end of season will be a great test and if you look at our fixtures we're actually playing all our rivals and have the opportunity to take points off them all!
