As far as I can recall Sels has had one poor game this season against Chelsea at home when he was clearly at fault for 2 of the goals but even the great Peter Shilton had the occasional off day (remember the Cologne semi-final?).

That Cologne semi-final will forever be in my mind. I was away on a long trip which started off by going to Khartoum and Jo'burg and then over the Indian Ocean to Hong Kong and Tokyo. Then back again. I spent days trying to find the result. Looking around the aircraft for old newspapers, asking anyone who cared to listen if they knew the score. Eventually rang my wife from the Seychelles to ask her. In those days, ringing home was almost like reporting a death in the family, so when I got through (you had to wait for the connections to be made) she accused me of being drunk and didn't know the score! Cost me ÂŁ50!

Finally when I heard the score, we were coming back and were to be in Jo'burg for the second leg, SABC had by this time got TV (they got it in 1976 I think) and we sat round the TV in the crew room (we were a VC10 crew so only five cabin crew) and watched the wonderful Bomber put it in the net. I could have flown home without the aircraft.

I've started reading your blog btw, it's great! Valuable stuff for those of us who are recent-ish Forest fans. You're close to my mom's age and have a great memory and an exciting way of writing. :love:

Watch some of the goals we conceded earlier this season. Some of them really don't put Sels in a good light. It's a real drop off from last season which makes me think he's a good keeper that needs a top defence, rather than a great keeper.

It's not a priority but if there's a top keeper available this summer I think we'd be foolish to not explore the option.

He is not above criticism, but you did describe him as Vlad-esque. Thats a pretty ridiculous comparison, even on the sub-optimal days.

He (jointly) won the golden glove and was nominated for the Yashin Award. His form may have dipped in a few games when the team was going through a rough patch, but that’s an incredibly harsh assessment.

Maybe it's not that ridiculous

Vlad is a ÂŁ20m keeper as Newcastle recognised, and we had to add on ÂŁ15m for Anderson. So if Anderson is now worth ÂŁ115 m, can someone work out how much Vlad is ?

It's tricky to find a keeper of both a decent standard and one also happy to bench warm. Easier if in Europe and you split the roles like last season.

I think the only way we would have had him stay is to guarantee him first team football over Sels, and to be fair there isn't much between them.

But then we probably should be looking elsewhere for a longer term replacement for Sels.

Doing that would probably also mean Sels is likely to leave and we'd be looking for a second choice.

Having him basically as cover for Sels, who has a summer to rest and get his injuries sorted out, for the rest of the season meant we didn't need to play JV or Angus Gunn in crucial run in matches and in the EL.

I may be putting two and two together and getting three hundred and eighty six, but apparently Ortega wants to come back to Germany, and a certain local side of my acquaintance have recently returned on-loan Alexander NĂĽbel to FC Bayern and now need a goalkeeper for next season's Champions League campaign (as well as the Bundesliga, of course) and their current options between the sticks are veteran backup Fabian Bredlow (who is 31, and has played 25 times in seven years, mostly in the German Cup) and 20-year old Dennis Seiman (who - as I have posted before - will I am convinced get the #1 shirt one day).

Interesting one!

Simples ...We can sell Victor (I mean technically if someone will buy him) as he has years left on his contract - but as Ortega's short term contract has expired we'd have to sign him again to then sell him, which would be nonsense as that would be an obstacle to him joining another club, when he can make himself available for a very good wage (as is usual when clubs aren't paying a transfer fee) as a free agent...
