Sels for me. He might have even got near McGinns shots.

For a back up, Ramsdale of he is willing?

Would cost too much to be our backup even if he was willing, which I'm not sure he would.

Popped it on the summer transfer thread but I'd be after Pierce Charles who's had a good season at Sheff Weds and would be available for around £2.5m

Not much resell value in Sels due to age but could we sell Sels and sign Ortega? Maybe long term Oterga’s wages would be an issue? Has Sels had a couple of injuries this season? If we keep him as number one would probably be prudent to have a top class back up.

Good #2 but Sels gets the jersey for me, part of me thinks coming here for 6 months was to try and force his way into Nagelsmann's thoughts for the W/C squad as one of their back up keepers. Fully expect him to move after season end now we have no European football to offer him.

I don't see the 6 month deal as weird at all. It suited both parties perfectly. We got a quality back up to Sels so our PL future and potential EL success wasnt compromised by an injury to Sels. And Ortega hot some valuable game time in high profile matches to remind people how good he is. A great deal all round.

Daniel Peretz for me in Southampton don't go up. Soon to be 26, been at a top club in Bayern, now has experience in England and has transformed Southampton at the back. You can bring him in to backup Sels for a season, let him play cup games and cover injuries to be the full time starter in '27. Sels will be 35 by the end of next season and his contract will be up, perfect succession planning if he is as good as he has been for Southampton with generally little outlay.

It's all about opinions but it surprises me how many of you would choose Ortega over Sels. I like Ortega he's been a quality addition but Sels pulls off the impossible time and time again, utterly superb

I think it's really close.

Sels probably edges it for reflexes and taking crosses out of the air, Ortega's not far off on the reflexes front but significantly better at helping build up play from the back/playing out under pressure.

I meant weird as in, weird if both parties wanted him to be here a bit longer term. I don't think I've ever seen a 6 month permanent transfer before.

Interesting

I saw the other day that he has a decent record saving pens as well including a few from a certain blond Norwegian

Transfermarkt has him at 5-13

Apparently there is a deal in place if Southampton go up that they can make the deal permanent, but I haven't been able to find out how much for but rumour is 8m euro.

Looking on the Saints forums, they would prefer to have Peretz next season in goal over Ramsdale. Make of that as you will.

It's a tiny sample size as well. Ortega has played 10 games for us, in about 6 of them he had nothing to do. I am not knocking Ortega, I would love to him to sign up for another season.

However, Sels is GUARENTEED to put in the same performances in week in week out - he has for the past decade.

I can only put it down to boredom that people would be willing to so easily discard Sels. Sels had another great game against Newcastle, it ended up getting us a point & those sort of performances are seen as the norm. He will go down as one of the best Forest keepers imo.

Man City had too many players out on loan to loan him out & his contract was up at the end of the season - we probably just took over his deal with a signing on fee. We could guarentee him European football so that is why he came here.

Now we can't guarentee that, you would assume Ortega will go somewhere else to be number 1. He's too good to be a backup.

I completely agree with you in regards to Peretz, he is a fantastic keeper & has been a huge reason for Southampton's rise up the table.

This is his only time he has really been first choice & he is easily the best keeper in the Championship. Not sure he would come here as backup but 100% agree he would be a great long term replacement for Sels. He has that Samba level confidence, I think that has been a big issue with a lot of our backups, they are probably good keepers but have all been shaky mentally.

Pierce Charles is a great shout. Very impressive young keeper whenever I've seen him.

Would steer well clear of Ramsdale too. Would be huge wages (and significant transfer fee) and, quite frankly, he's looked a desperately poor at times when he has played this season.

Agreed.

It will be a sad day when Sels leaves Nottingham Forest as he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve seen at the club in
60 years.

Hopefully he’s good for at least 2 more years yet.

I still think Sels had the season of his career last season but has been nowhere near that level this season. Some of his performances in the first half of the season were Vlach-esque. He's a good keeper and we've certainly had our moneys worth but I wouldn't be against us exploring the option to improve the position this summer.

Vlach-esque.🤣

As far as I can recall Sels has had one poor game this season against Chelsea at home when he was clearly at fault for 2 of the goals but even the great Peter Shilton had the occasional off day (remember the Cologne semi-final?).

I think Sels has been great again this season and he’s one of the first names on the team sheet for me.

2nd half of this season, since the turn of the year that is, he's been damn well near that level.

He was letting shots in I would expect of Vlachodimos, not of the Sels of last season. I think the rest of the team was poor enough to leave him exposed but he'd be disappointed with some of the goals that went in I'm sure.

Thankfully he's got his arse in gear in the last 6 months or so and the team has reaped the benefits as a result.
