Squeezing the most out of Notts

Just a thought for somebody who has the time.

I was thinking it ought to be possible to look at the towns with the best football support, and work out how many football fans they manage to get per 100 people in the town. That ought to give a best percentage of football fans (that actually attend games) in the country. It'd be interesting to apply that to the Nottinghamshire population and see how close we're getting to being statistically a top footballing county.

It would also mean we could see just how much we could do with attendances if say, Forest and Notts County were in the Prem, and Mansfield were in League 1 or something.

Sorry don't know the stats but I think we have a large catchment area and have great potential to draw in a bigger crowd than we do currently.
Blackburn have always impressed me. They manage to pull crowds of nearly 30,000 which is nearly a third of the residential population. The catchment area is also quite small with Man u, city, Bolton, Burnley and Preston nearby too.
Birmingham and Villa are clubs that should do better really. With only 2 clubs in the city, they should regularly see 60 k gates.

Good point, Blackburn must be the biggest footballing town in the country?!

They're getting 30% of their population attending by your stat there. Say that's optomistic, and its only 20% then?

Notts is home to over 1,000,000 people, so that would mean that, squeezed, we ought to be able to get 200,000 fans out of the county. That's immense really, and it probably means that there's enough people here to support Forest, Notts and Mansfield all doing well!

The Nottingham urban area is actually very high. It ranks 8th behind Liverpool with 666,000. It's urban area is higher than Sheffield, Cardiff and Bristol.
Judging by that, and that it's a "football" area we should beable to get up to 45k once we move to Gamston

Ahem, you mean, once we expand the City Ground and fan pressure brings back standing areas in the new Main Stand.

Once it is the "norm" for locals to support Forest again, there is no reason why we can attract crowds like this

this is a good challenge. i like it.

i did a quick analysis of the top 2 divisions. here are the highest performing counties. number given is number of attending fans per 1000 of the population.

1) Tyne and Wear (75.4)
2) Lancashire (73.6)
3) Merseyside (60.4)
4) South Yorkshire (54.0)
5) West Midlands (48.7)
6) Greater Manchester (47.0)
7) East Riding of Yorkshire (40.5)
8) Bristol (34.3)
9) Suffolk (29.3)
10) Greater London (29.2)

Nottinghamshire has 21.3 right now without the pies. I'd expect that to go up when I find the time to do the other two divisions. Greater London will definitely rise above Suffolk and I'd expect West Yorkshire to make a hit once I add Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield.

When? They only got 26,689 against Burnley which is their derby game.

Blackburn only gave Bu****y the same amount of tickets Bu****y would be giving Blackburn in the reverse fixture. Bu****y could have easily took 8,000 there.

oh, i fookin hate Bu****y aswell.

You have to consider club attraction as well...

Forest have had an absolutely dire 10 years worth of football yet we've held onto a core fanbase of around 16,000. Birmingham meanwhile, who have had their fair share of successes as well as failures and who are in a bigger catchment area don't get much more than that.

You may want to consider Forest's proximity to clubs in other geographical areas. Derby is 30 minutes away and they attract 25,000+ every week. Sheffield Wednesday and United are 40 minutes away and not far behind on numbers. The multitude of Birmingham teams and Leicester are also fan stealers, not to mention the 5,000 or so that support the pies across the river...

Newcastle on the other hand have Sunderland is close proximity and Boro a bit further out, but apart from that there's nothing until you reach Leeds - about an hour and three quarters south.

What about ticket pricing/offers? Would Derby be getting such high attendances per area if they didn't offer free tickets for every picture of sheep sex sent to the CEO?

And what about spread of fans? Does MJ not count as a 'devoted' fan because he doesn't travel 40 million miles every week?

Too many variables to ever come to a conclusion. We have a decent set of fans regardless of any 'figures.'
