Samuel William Surridge

I love Surridge, as I do all of the promotion squad, and without him we probably wouldn't have got promoted - his goals when Grabban an Davis were essential. He is a very good finisher, probably Premier League standard in that regard. But he's not very quick, despite being 6'3 not physically imposing, not particularly good at holding up the ball and his technique and all round play is mid-level Championship level. However, if he'd dropped back down to the Championship and worked, he might have made it back to Prem eventually and done alright.
BIB you could have been talking about Wood there, and those attributes haven't stopped him being a top class PL forward if given the right service.

We won't know if Sam would have been any different in this side instead of Wood, but we did know that was unknown and that Wood would get goals.

If anything he's another example of a tall striker who is mobile but not quick, and not physically dominant as a hold up player, but can finish if given the chance.

Guess he perhaps might not have been as physically dominant when he was learning the game and so didn't really develop the hold up aspects at an early age.

I did actually nearly write something about Wood there as there are quite a few similarities. That's why it's a shame he went off to the MLS, because if he'd gone back to the Champ he might have been able to work his way back up.

One of the best finishers I've seen here in recent seasons. Think he got a start in our first match back at this level but hardly had sniff after that. Few sub minutes here and there.

Still think he would be a handy option from the bench.

Yes he started in our first match back in the Prem at St James', barely got a touch as I recall, a half chance header and that was that. Limited minutes thereafter.

Yeah I still think he'd do a job in our squad but no chance of that now. Great to watch on his day in the Championship - that performance vs Swansea at home was one of the best I've seen from any striker in a Forest shirt.

Ben Olsen, maybe, but I can't remember what league we were in back then.

Perhaps you're right Statto, but I still think Surridge got a raw deal from Coops in our first season back in the Prem. His finishing was ice cold in the promotion season, and while he was admittedly dismal in that Blackpool game, so was every single other Forest player, so its a bit unfair to single him out in that one. Who knows, maybe in another life he'd have had more opportunities in the Prem, and things might have clicked for him.
I think of you are rusty and not playing much it is always hard. The Blackpool game most of the team were rusty so it is no surprise we missed chances and ended up losing.

I would have given surridge game time ahead of Ayew that is for sure.

I think he’d have done better in the PL under Nuno but there’s zero chance he would contribute anything in a team fighting for the Champions League.

I don’t blame him at all for choosing to live in Nashville instead of playing for a random Championship team in a city what gets 3 days of sun a year.

Score a few goals over 5 or so years then he could probably walk into a pundits job in the States. I’m sure Bradley Wright-Phillips has his citizenship fast tracked because he scored goals for NY Red Bulls and is living a much better life than if he decided to stay bouncing round league one teams till he retired.

TBH He's the guy I use as the example of how poor our squad was upon promotion.
Surridge was our No. 1 striker ffs of course we needed a whole new squad.

Put Wood in the Championship & he would be a physical monster

He doesn't look that physical against Prem defenders because they are all monsters themselves.

But he's 6 foot 4, strong, deceptively quick for his size - put that in the Championship & he would be unstoppable even without his world class finishing.

Surridge wasn't physical enough for the Prem, and you give him the benefit of the doubt if he continued his amazing finishing but every chance he got that promotion season he missed easy chances. We did the right thing moving him on, no time for players to dine off Championship glory, we learnt that the hard way with our defence.

None of these opinions on Sturridge are wrong. But he got as many PL goals in that first season as Taiwo has this season - one.

Sorry, just realised I 'liked' a comment from the crypt. I thought Sturridge was a good finisher, but agree that he lacked physicality, despite seeming pretty tall. Hypothetically, should the classical number 9 make a comeback, do you think he could play in the PL if he put a lot of work into becoming more robust? Genuine question.

That said, I don't know if he would have the required mentality but some of his goals were taken really well, imho.

The guy has 17 non-penalty goals in 49 MLS games, 3 non-penalties in 10 this season

I don't think he's a premier league player
Not gonna argue with you. Honestly, haven't been following his stats; too busy vibing with Ola!

Still remember the Swansea hatrick and the late equaliser against Boremuff... Top lad and part of the team that could and did..

Me and my son were talking about that Swansea game in the promotion season and the fantastic Sam Surridge hat trick.

As we were sitting in the Trent end that day, we saw all of the second half goals close up - we were right behind the goal.

Fantastic day; fantastic win; fantastic goals and fantastic super Sami Surridge!
