With all the MGW fuss recently and conversations about loyalty it got me thinking about our actual captain.

What's the normal nowadays for when he'd be due a testimonial?
It always used to be after 10 years a player was due one.

He signed first for us in 2005 (so he's been with us for 20 years)
He signed professional contract in 2016 (so is he due a testimonial next summer?)
He first played for the first team in 2018 (so is he due a testimonial in 2028?)

His current four year contract expires in 2028, so at some point in the near future he must be due a testimonial, so when, and who are we hoping for as the opposition?

Lincoln would be nice considering it's where he's from.

I don’t know for sure but I would have thought ten years since signing a professional contract might be appropriate. Without checking, I could believe that for some of our beneficiaries in years gone the ten years might have included time in the reserves before they made it into the first team.

As wealthy as Premier League players are these days, if and when he qualifies I would hope he would be granted a testimonial (and that’s usually a year with various events, not just a match) as he would have shown rare loyalty to one club and by spending ten years at one club and not, say, four clubs he wouldn’t have augmented his wages with repeated signing-on fees from transfers. And, perhaps more to the point, a testimonial match would give the fans a chance to show their appreciation in a way they can’t do on a normal match day. I made the 200 mile round trip for Psycho’s testimonial match and would hope to do so for Yates too.

Testemonials were vital for loyal players once upon a time, when they didn't earn what the players get paid today.
The last one I went to was for Joe Baker.

If a Ryan Yates Testimonial Match was announced - and normally and historically it was after ten years of "first team" service for a player - I don't care who it is against or where it is held, I would be willing to make the logistics work and even walk there (or hitchhike) from Germany.

Indeed they were vital. It helped them out while they pondered whether to run a pub or sell insurance after they finished playing. I think the origins of testimonials might even have been people going round the pitch at a particular match with a hat or other receptacle for the fans to throw a coin or to into, before things got more organised.

Yes, clearly no Premier League player is ever going to need such a helping hand from the fans but if he completes ten years Yates will have earned the recognition aspects of a testimonial and in the (relatively) modern era some players have had one but given the money to charity (Niall Quinn comes to mind but I’m sure there are plenty of others).

When was that Captain? My memory isn't quite what it was but I don't remember it and I was a huge, huge fan of his, to the point that he's still towards the top of my all-time top-ten list of favourite Forest players.

Also, despite his impact at the CG, he was only here for a period short of four years.

I don’t recall a Joe Baker testimonial at Forest either,Frank.

Surprised he's not given MGW a smack and made him sign a new deal. We all know in a fight Yatesy would win against all but our big serb.

It was 1969 or 70. There were around 10,000 there.
