Rico Lewis (BUPA)

You can never hold it against a young ambitious player that he wants to stay at a top club and backs himself to work his way in to the team. As long as he now thinks a different approach may work and he drops down with the burning ambition to make it to the top that is fine and benefits everyone.
Exactly.

Same logic we could say we wouldn’t take Gareth Bale in his prime as he turned us down early in his career.

Sounds a lot like Ando
Erm, not really?

Anderson was central midfielder who had stints out on the wing.
He was never brought through in a very difficult to replicate system that dominates the ball.
He never previously turned us down and he never got replaced at Newcastle as Howe never gave him the opportunity.
Even just looking at the two physically, Anderson has the build of a box to box midfielder, Lewis is 5'8... Obviously being small doesn't stop you being that type of player, but he has been brought through at City where you don't have to scrap and battle the likes of Kante had to in the French lower leagues.

But I suppose they are both young and English, I will give you that.

If we sign him, I trust the recruitment team and hope he is just as big of a success as Anderson has been. But I just don't see the appeal unless the likes of Jones, Bergvall and some others we have been linked with go elsewhere.

I would stay away from him. Pep stopped playing him because he kept making poor decisions, whether it was his pass selection, or his propensity to switch off and allow his mark to wander into good positions before a finish. He's good technically and quick, but his mental game is lacking. We do not need that in the middle of the park, imho.

I wouldn’t bother with Lewis, similar to Spence good at attacking but switches of to many times when doing the defending element of his game.

Will make a more than decent right wing back for Glasner.
Does he have the dynamism for that? I am really not sure that’s the type of player he is.

Last night watching England cemented my fears - all I could think watching O’Rielly last night was he isn’t a fullback in any setup baring a pep system - exactly my fear looking at Lewis.

Not sure the issue is that O'Reilly can't play outside of Pep system. It's more that he seems to be under orders to play in a certain way so isn't playing his natural game. Like Anderson he's just taking the safe option all the time. That's the opposite of how he plays for City. He wants to break forward all the time and you can almost see him telling himself not to. He's very inexperienced so he's only used to playing one way.

Bringing it back to Lewis, he's just not good enough. For a right back he lacks physicality, pace, concentration and size, and he's only used to playing in a possession based team. Compare him to a fit Aina and it's night and day. The comparison to O'Reilly is instructive because regardless of ability O'Reilly is massive and very quick.

Wonder if Glasner might look to bring Munoz in from Palace. That’s a proper wingback.
Doubt it, he is going to be expensive and at 30 there is little value there. I'd love us to go for Diouf at West Ham as LWB, move Neco to RWB. You can cover Diouf's defensive frailties then with Murillo or another. Still only 21 as well I think and his crossing is some of the best in the league

Wingback/ fullback was always an important part of our recruitment this summer and now it's right at the top. Need athletic monsters who can also play and ideally include a goal threat. Luckily we already have Neco.
