realistic expectations for next season.

I know its a bit early to been thinking of this but what are peoples realistic expectations for next season?

I know in other threads Ive touted us as champions next season but this hangs on a number of factors.

1) billy staying on as manager
2) sorting out our god awful away form of late
3) getting some new quality faces in the squad who have experience at the higher level of the championship and premiership.
4) patience and expectations of fans.

the last one is the important one is it possible if we heap expectations to high will it put unnecessary pressure on the players? also if we don't sign any quality players including a left back and it is true we over achieved this season are we looking at mid table next season or maybe scrapeing into the play offs.

its safe to say who ever we start the season with will be what we will be stuck with for the entire season as we never strengthen in January windows and I just don't see that changing.

my heart says automatic my head says mid table.

does anyone know what the table would be if it started from the 31st of jan?

Think Billy will stay but not 100%

We will bring in 3 or 4 quality additions

One will be a left back

At least one European player possibly more

We must get top two next season - we can't go into the lottery of playoffs again

To do that we will need Billy to stay

We will never have a better chance with the state of the teams coming down

Would prefer Blackpool to go up though as don't want to face them again

think due to what we payed for him that is out of our hands if a club comes with a 4-5m I reckon he will leave, and I wouldnt stand in his way he deserves premiership football after this years world cup there will be calls for a fresh england squad and maybe cohen would have a chance.

Top 2/Champions.

With some signings of course.

1) billy staying on as manager
I think he will stay because of extra investment from Doughty. Touted in Radio Nottingham last night at 8/9 million. Will get a couple of real quality players inc wages

2) sorting out our god awful away form of late
Would worry about this at all, simply down to lack of depth, which will be sorted with 1.

3) getting some new quality faces in the squad who have experience at the higher level of the championship and premiership. see 1

4) patience and expectations of fans.
This is not a problem. We all know we are about a mid table champ side that exceeded ourselves this season.

This club is on the march, but give it time guys! there's absolutely no rush.
Preparation and a steady march for automatic is way better than the playoffs for us!

For the last 4 seasons in a row we have bought sensibly, and have improved our squad and our position in the league. We haven't sold a single player we wanted to keep.

I expect us to continue this trend -

We will keep the vast majority of this squad together, I can only see some of the fringe players moving on (Lynch, Perch, Adebola, Garner?). We will add about 4 players, of whom 3 will be excellent signings, and at least one will be top quality.

In a weaker league, we will improve our position and will finish 2nd. Reading will win the legue - we'll be on their coat tails until March, but will fade at the end.

We'll all agree it was a good job we didn't go up this year, and we'll all claim that's what we said at the time. There will be 29,000 at the last game of the season, and the one filling the space just in front of me will moan bitterly at every misplaced pass, call the majority of our players pathetic, and tell Billy to go forth and fornicate - he will react very abusively when asked where he was for the previous 22 games, and whether he's ever seen a game without commentray before.

I can see us turning into the new PNE. Always around the top but never really doing it.

Billy Stays and 4 or 5 additions then a serious mount for #1 spot.

Otherwise feck knows, mid table?!

To be honest, I think we'll fall somewhere around 10th. Theres so much expectation for next season based on this one, and I dont think we'll be able to live up to it.

This season:
Newcastle, WBA, Plymouth, Peterboro, Sheff Weds (AN OTHER) all leaving

Next season:
Hull, Burnley, Portsmouth, Leeds, Norwich (AN OTHER) all arriving

No idea whether that is easier or harder! but with 2 or 3 class signings, Billy Davies and a bit of luck, then Top 2.

I cannot even bring myself to predict a play-off place! still feel sick about last night

We should be at least bloodyfuckingbastardplayoff contenders again. If Billy stays.. and with a couple of real quality signings we can go up automatically.

I would like to see these players moved on:
Perch = Priority
McCleary
McGugan
Lynch
Chambers
Smith
Adebola

The rest to stay with new additions:
Shorey / Bouma
Pratley
Adam if not promoted
Sigurdsson
Hreiarsson
O'Hara now i'm dreaming
westward GK

just for starters  then finish as Champions

Marshall.

Bring in a quality LB and a few more quality players and I think top 6 is a minimum until we reach the Premiership but I really want a top 2 finish next season.

It's got to be automatic promotion for me. I think next season is the best and most realistic chance we'll have of achieving that because, after next season, the newly increased and extended parachute payments will really begin to increase the gulf between clubs that are relegated from the Premiership and the rest.

In a few years' time, if Doughty isn't prepared to invest even more heavily, we just won't be able to compete.

4) patience and expectations of fans.

I totally agree with that. Don't want fans getting onto the players if we haven't been playing well. Look at how we started this season. Just need to be calm and patient

Well, last time we flopped the play offs, we strengthened and went up automatic, same again please Billy!

Keep Paul Smith - he's an excellent back-up keeper. Sell a couple of fringe players who have little or no impact on the side perhaps. Ideally, I'd keep the whole squad together.

Bring in at least four more faces. A left back and a goalscoring midfielder are the priorities.

I'd like to think we'll challenge at the top again. Next season won't be as tough at the top of the league. Pompey won't have that many quality players as they'll have to use freebies etc... Hull will sell their best players and bring in loanees and freebies and Burnley have Brian Laws in charge which, for me, means finishing just outside the play-offs or below.

Norwich could be a dark horse to shoot up the league like Leicester have this season.

At this incredibly early point in time, I'd say the top few teams next season will be Forest, Norwich, Middlesbrough, Cardiff/Blackpool, Reading, Hull, Leeds.
