It always intrigues me how players just find the wrong club at the wrong time and then the right club at the right time, grow mentally stronger and then suddenly their value is higher than when they were at the club/s they performed shite at.

I suppose it's like most of our own work careers?

It is a fine line between huge success or (relative) failure. The right manager who believes in the player, you click with another player or two, you get lucky or unlucky with an injuries. Confidence. So many factors can make or break a career. Players like Ian ashbee who didn’t make the grade at derby, looked like he was settled in to the league 2 career and moved up with Hull city through the divisions to become a premier league player near the end of his career.

David McGoldrick went on to score goals and make a huge contribution everywhere after leaving Forest, even getting applauded for his work rate and defensive contribution which always baffled me after the minimal effort he put in here week in week out.

I was listening to a podcast, I can't remember the player but it was such an interesting story.

If memory serves: He signed for a team under one manager, the manager changed and he basically never spoke to the new bloke. He ended up playing a reserves game, then immediately after the game the new gaffer shouted him to stay on the pitch as they were short a left back for a first team elevens match. He was obviously knackered but ended up having the game of his life and essentially went straight in as the first choice left back. Completely by chance, and it made his career.

I suspect most footballers have an element of 'right place, right time, right person' about them - maybe that's why our academy has always built resilient character over everything else.
