i have done a bit of statistical analysis of attendances in this division.
i have taken the percentage difference of each attendance from every team's away games this season compared to the average attendance of the home team.
for example, against watford on boxing day there was an attendance of 17086. their average attendance is 14178 - so we provided a 20.5% boost to their attendance.
when coventry came here yesterday there was an attendance of 28608. our average attendance is 23458 - so they provided a 22% boost to our attendance.
obviously midweek games are down and these games were at christmas so there is a bit of a boost, but all this should average out.
so here is the table of the average attendance boost provided by each team in this league this season:
newcastle +26.0%
nottm forest +12.4%
middlesbrough +10.4%
leicester +6.01%
sheff wed +2.02
derby +1.72%
west brom +1.22%
doncaster +1.18%
crystal palace +0.60%
barnsley -0.01%
ipswich -0.23%
qpr -0.48%
plymouth -1.43%
cardiff -2.39%
sheff utd -2.47%
blackpool -3.76%
peterborough -4.02%
bristol c -5.61%
watford -5.95%
preston -6.25%
reading -6.65%
swansea -6.76%
coventry -7.14%
scunthorpe -7.82%
this shows:
1) how much of a pull the team are for locals when they arrive
2) how big the away support of a team is
btw we have only been down on the average attendance of a team we have gone to on three occasions this season:
vs cardiff
vs ipswich
vs qpr
none of these were more than 3% off the team's standard average attendance
derby have been down more than 10% three times this season - against cardiff, palace and middlesbrough.
when we visited peterborough, plymouth and watford they experienced an attendance more than 20% bigger than they usually achieve.
