well until late December anyway....

I posted this in response to the Bundy thread but it seemed to have got lost and a few people have asked me about my conspiracy theory, so I thought I'd post it again and you can all discuss it and then laugh it of ;)...

Why is promotion and showing real ambition a bad thing at present? How could promotion damage the club longer term.... My theory is the world cup stadium...

A decision is to be made in December on who it hosting the 2018 World cup, something England is a leading contender of. In the English bid there is a proposal for a new stadium to be built in Nottingham which will be a fantastic opportunity for Nottingham Forest to be able to inherit and pay for on the long term.... However, if the bid is successful and Nottingham Forest were/are promoted, or showing signs of promotion before the financing of this stadium is agreed then I would imagine the club would be expected to be pay for the whole project or a large proportion over a smaller amount of time...

The situation itself is a political minefield for both the local government of Nottingham and the club itself. If Forest were to be seen not to pay for a stadium despite being the the big league with all the riches, it would be a public relations disaster and if the local government would be seen not to demand this it would be a political disaster for the people in power...

The problem is with the current climate, no politician or taxpayer would consider the longer term effects it would have on the club. Only Nigel Doughty, Mark Arthur and a very few select members of the clubs board would see the real disaster ahead... think David Platt and double it!!! Forest couldn't afford to finance a new stadium until at least 3-4 years minimum in the Prem and even then after strenghtening the squad to retain this status, they would barely be able to finance it....

If for the short term, they don't show ambition, waiting for the outcome of the bid and agreeing a finance package with the council that benefits the club premiership or not then and only then should the club show real ambition....

Although if we are top of the table and flying come Dec/Jan, the politicians will be wanting their pound of flesh and how would the club be able to argue... It's a case of short term loss for long term gain, but should this have any ounce of truth, despite it being my own theory then it's a sensible ploy in my opinion....

Whether this is true or not I couldn't hazard a guess BUT December will be a time when we will push on or not. New stadiums and player purchases are intrinsically linked the world over.
