Totally off topic Notch I remember in another thread you mentioned playing for Gresley Rovers. Were they still the the Great Gresley Rovers then or had that era passed. They seemed to win trophy's by the bucket load, I also remember them getting to Wembley. My local in Long Eaton had 4 players who were in the Wembley squad.
Always felt sorry for Gresley as they look at Burton Albion and see what they could have been. When I first moved to Burton in 1997 Gresley won the Southern League at a canter and Burton were nowhere. They got denied promotion to the Conference though and all went downhill from there.

That was well before I played Colin. I was only there very briefly due to that fat bullying prick John McGinley. I walked out because he was such a twat

Good to hear thoughts about those tournaments. We were not long in the bookshop in the 90s and I was new to business in general and the book business in particular so that decade just flew by with minimal attention to Forest, just League results, really.

I rely on memories I read about on here to fill me in on these times. Like the 60s, too, which was a blur, though not for reasons you might expect!

The umbro cup im sure was a tournament played by England and Brazil were in it, Sweden and Japan i think it was pre euro 96.

Yep. It was a competition organized by Umbro itself in the summer of 1995 to allow England to prepare in the best way for the 1996 European Championships.

The success of the Umbro Cup was such that Umbro repeated the experiment in the summer of 1996 and 1997, again in England, this time involving club teams and rebranding the event as the Umbro International Tournament. In 1996, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Ajax, and Manchester United (all Umbro-sponsored teams) participated.

I remember very little about the games other than it being very hot and Beckham scoring a belter against Forest in a 1-3 defeat.

My memory might be playing tricks here as I was only a teenager but I seem to remember Collymore playing and basically tossing it off. It might have been before his transfer to Liverpool.

It was played at Leeds. We played Sampdoria on the Saturday and Stuttgart on the Sunday. As Otis said, it was Laws (Cooper came the following season) and we were all pissing ourselves laughing in the stand.
Another memory for me Bing was Crossley's reaction to the new backpass rule. Being the frustrated outfield player that he was, he seemed to be in his element dealing with backpasses to his feet, although I'm not sure Cloughie shared Norm's enthusiasm.

I went to the Umbro Cup back in 95 or whenever it was. Looking back it was a hell of a coup to get both Man Utd and Ajax to take part. Ajax would've been European champions around that time.

I distinctly remember shouting 'TAXI' at Dennis Wise as he took his penalty although as a 9 year old had no idea why...

Colin Cooper won his 2 England caps in the Umbro Cup if I’m not mistaken

And the Sun were very rude about him calling it “Tommy Cooper” defending for England.

Frank Clark in his memoir said he was an outstanding top division defender but just lacked that tiny 1% that was needed to be a success for England.

Shame really, as Colin Cooper was superb for Forest, really, really, good.

I remember Spurs pumping ball after ball into our box and he calmly headed them all away - what a player.

Loved Colin Cooper. Could just be the aforementioned hazy memory, but seem to recall him often coming up with timely goals too including some free kicks. #wherehaveallthedefenderstakingfreekicksandpenaltiesgone?

The game was televised which never happens for a preseason and Colin Cooper (I think) got down on all fours to head a ball back to the keeper, he was then booked for unsporting behaviour.
It was Brian Laws. He ran off grinning like a naughty schoolboy.

Going forward I wonder if there's some potential to link up with Textors clubs and Marinakis group for some kind of preaseason tournament. Might be a bit difficult with Botafogo but there could be something to make it work.

Crazy how fast it's going! But this time next week we will have our full set of fixtures for the 25/26 season until they are inevitably moved, shuffled and destroyed by our TV masters.

09:00 BST on Wednesday 18 June.

Who do you fancy first ?

I hear that the pitch was going to be replaced after yesterday's game, so does that mean no home friendlies again ?

I wonder if we'll get the yearly Oly friendly in Piraeus. It's become a tradition. And I can't see why not, the first week of August is free for both clubs.
