Exactly this.

We looked excellent for 60 mins. Just too much for them to keep playing at that level in that heat with no subs.

Let's hope for a good week of 2/3 signings before the next friendly.
 
Just as the players deserve time to bed into a new system and get fit etc, so Olly needs time to find his best team for the system he wants to use. Or, if he doesn't have the players for his system, he deserves time to adapt the system to fit the players he has.

In short, give them all time. I feel confident the result will be worth watching.
 
I managed to watch the Potuguese TV 8 minutes highlights.
One couldn't glean much from those.
Jesus is beginning to show signs he can be the fox in the box.
Wood's miss was symptomatic of a player who was just returning to the squad.
Sporting looked a level above us in terms of finishing, and from what I could see fitness as well.
 
Watched it all on Turkish TV from the balcony in Antalya and I’ll be honest, I thought we looked very exciting for the first 60-odd minutes until they rotated the team and our legs had clearly gone at that point.

We didn’t stop pressing at any point, the wing backs were super high and ultimately it was a bit of tired inexperience from our two young centre backs for the flurry of goals at the end from Sporting; but given they are a champions league side (and a very good one at that), a week away from the start of their season and we clearly didn’t play the strongest possible 11 (as they did, pretty much) I thought we looked a real problem for any team in the prem.

Some issues for me, though. Aina doesn’t look like he’s got the attacking chops atm, and McAtee missed a few challenges through timing or lack of strength in the first half; but he addressed that in the second half and played some lovely football outside of that. One pass he zinged out low and hard to the right wing caught my eye in the second half in particular. Dominguez is playing like a man possessed too!

I watched the whole game & I'd agree with you re Jesus. He's also a grafter & worked his socks off throughout the game. Wood had 4 chances just after half time and a fully fit Wood would have taken one. Sporting were significantly fitter especially in the last 30 minutes. Their season starts next Saturday. Their finishing was also the result of mistakes by - Abbott for example was turned in the penalty area and their player then scored...

It reminds me of the pre-season just before the Paul Hart play-off year. David Johnson had done the square root of f*** all leading up to it and for the time cost a lot of money.

He got fit that summer, scored a few in friendlies and then hit 30-odd over the season.

I think for a striker particularly pre-season form is huge.
 
Is Savona still crocked? Going to Alalanta?

Would love to see him given a chance. Think he'd make a better wing back than full back.
 
Sorry, but I don't agree at all we were excellent. Always interesting to see others views but I thought for a lot of the game we were really poor! Marking from corners was non-existent and if we're being honest they missed 2 glorious chances from corners. Milenkovic was so tight all the time with their striker, causing multiple fouls, Aina didn't know where to be on the pitch and half the time MGW was further back in defence than he was.

We had glaring holes in centre midfield, which Sporting bypassed through - on many occasions their keeper just whacked it straight down the middle low and hard and they were away. And I really hope they aren't our tactics this season to simply whack it up top to Wood at most opportunities, it was so poor to watch and whilst I agree it's mostly about fitness with pre-season, we'll be in trouble if we play hoofball football to Wood every time and bypass the midfield. Yes we were missing first teamers, but they should not be the tactics! Yes we pressed high but so what, half the time we didn't get the ball off them.

For me, only Jesus could take any credit for a decent game.
 
How long has the squad been out in Portugal now?
By the time they come home I think it will have been the best part of a month.
The thought of having to go abroad for that long with my work mates would fill me with dread... and my mates would definitely be feeling dread at the thought of a month abroad with me!
And don't most of the players have wives or girlfriends, not to mention young families?
Does the overseas trip include all of them
If I was a member of that squad, I think that by now I'd be ready for decking someone!
I think a warts and all piece to camera by the players on a one by one basis would be very revealing.
'tain't natural all those fit and virile young men locked away in a hotel, or sharing communal baths and showers every day...
It'll be like a public school dorm after lights out by now!

Agreed I would absolutely hate it. But they're already back as far as I know and it was less than two weeks. Flew out Monday 20th, flew back Friday 31st.

Talk about destroying the ozone layer with all the jet-setting.
It's a good job I've gone EV (well, with one of the Jags), otherwise we might be experiencing the worst of climate change already!

I'm going with my 10 year old boy, my Italian brother-in-law and his 12 yr old daughter. But we only live about 1hr 50mins down the motorway from Udinese stadium.

I don't often go back to Nottingham nowadays, but when I do it's been impossible to get tickets for City Ground.

I count myself lucky that The Reds have chosen to pre-season so close to us (vs Barcellona to boot!)

We'll be in the away end if anyone wants to have a chat,,,
