Pre-season friendlies 2026

Top quality from Sporting

I think all three of their goals in this half have been from brilliant attacking play - I'm finding the pile-on on our defence (or some of them anyway) a bit harsh really. Sometimes to you have to just say fair play.

It might not seem like much but I think more than anything today shows the difference between a team that's a few weeks out from the start of the season and a team that's about to start their season next week

I'm sure we'll look much sharper for the full 90 minutes in our last friendly before Leeds

Not sure where our wingers are going to fit in. OG obviously wants to continue his fav wingback approach with 2 10s

Yes it was just a friendly, hence the team but.. Morgan was off (especially first touch) Dominguez was everywhere as always and McAtee looked very settled and strong. Unfortunately young Zach was exposed quite badly, Sels still doesn't inspire confidence when balls are crossed into the box (rabbit in headlights as when he froze mid way for their 3rd) and I love Ola but he is looking like a back up only under the new system...

Second half we looked dead on our feet, don't want to be overly critical as it's only a friendly but Wood was very rusty and Abbott out of his depth. In the first half we played some good football, hopefully it's just a case of a lack of fitness and missing some key parts of our team. You could tell Sporting were much further ahead in their preparations plus had subs to bring on. Maybe it was just solely an exercise in getting those first team players upto fitness by giving them a full run out.

Its clearly not going to be our starting back line come leeds. Would need injuries and not getting diomande. Abbott not a starter at moment and probably wont be next season, a loan is probably best.

90 valuable minutes into every player and no injuries, doesn't bode well for Bakwa who was on the bench (and i don't think he played earlier?).

2nd half we got hosed but i'm not in any way worried, if anything it just tells us what we knew in that we need more quality in defence (Murillo and Diomande incoming) and the jury is still out on Ainas ability to have the legs to play in Glasners most demanding role as a wing back. Does Jair and Abbott have what it takes to play Glasners level of defending? Both young, both with potential and only time will tell.

Dom and McAtee standouts. Woodie hot/cold, Jesus dangerous, MGW wasn't involved much. Serious gig for Neco and Ola, i'd say they covered 12k each tonight.

Now lets get some money spent before the next game(s).

Wood also played in world cup. His 35 years old, there a reason most players retire at 30ish from international football

Became messy in the 2nd half, I suppose you can put that down to fitness levels, etc.

Wood & Abbott were both poor though & MGW never really got into the game. The two in midfield played some nice stuff but it's not really a viable central midfield pairing for me. Jesus was probably our stand out player, with some nice touches & movement playing as one of the 10's.

The back 3 definitely needs Murillo & Diomande either side of Milenkovic if we want to press higher. In fact I think the whole team currently lacks legs & looks a bit on the slow side.
