It was formally RAF Finningley a major V bomber base and logistics. The runway was very long.

I have never flown out of that airport, hence my ignorance.
I am somewhat fortunate in that my local airport, STR, was formerly a reconstituted US Air Force bomber base, and thus has an extended runway that can handle the 747 and larger aircraft. We were fortunate last year to get a visit from the converted 747 that houses the SOFIA flying observatory, and you could get an interior tour of it, which was frankly mindblowing.

Would I make you further jealous if I told you I got a tour around SOFIA when it landed at STR?
(a colleague of mine is a graduate of the University of Stuttgart and she worked with the astrophysics group for part of her dissertation; I have to say - and I am a tech-head - the stuff on SOFIA was absolute Science-fiction to me!)
And yes, I am also waiting with some excitement for the first images from the JWST next week.
