Listening to Fletch did cheer me up yesterday, liked his positive perspective on the season and our position. He was also saying people at club see this season as a stepping stone in us establishing ourselves as a top side and regularly competing for cups, Europe etc. As think it easy to look at things the other way that we missed out this season and this is a unique and one off season.

Not sure about being succinct

On today's pod Temps was talking about us having achieved above what would be considered par and Fletch jumped right in over him and went on a five minute rant about how he didn't understand how people were judging what "par" was
Par is a golfing term it sounded ridiculous, he was right to pull him up

It's a common idiom/analogy for expected level of outcome. It was a perfectly reasonable use. Fletch's issue with it was what Temps thought of as par. Temps thought midtable, 45+ points was par, whereas Fletch said par is where you were last season which was 17th on 32pts (36 without the deduction). I have to side with Fletch as you can only compare to last season, not where you expect to be, but the use of term was fine.

That kinda was my point, Ali was saying some ridiculous stuff then threw his toys out the pram when fletch questioned it & ended up starting his own podcast
Has Ali actually continued it, or has he just sulked off?

Yeah, I think Temps even agreed with Fletch's point in the end.

I'll be honest I've literally never heard par used in football until I listened to that podcast yesterday. But if it is and I've had my head in the sand then fair enough.

I bet you hear it a few times over the next few weeks/months now. Always happens to me when I hear a word or a phrase I'm not familiar with, then it's like as soon as I acknowledge it, I start hearing it all the time.

This is a great read, I hope you guys can read it and there's no paywall. If there is, I can try to find a way around it.
The bit about Yates makes so much sense.
Great piece that, thanks for posting.

Obviously people such as yourself who have been through that system will recognise a lot of the circumstances under which our players got to the higher level. Interesting to also see the role of their families in it.

Interestingly I found that the lads in the academy system who came from families that were broken tended to fare better in terms of adapting and not missing home as much.

It can obviously work completely the other way in terms of support but it was just an observation I made.

It's a valid observation, I think it's something that, for better or worse, forces those kids to become naturally tougher and more street-smart, and a lot of the time that is a useful asset for a footballer. Our eldest played in a U9 team a year ago and we noticed that the kids who looked more street-smart were also the best of the bunch. They just looked a level above. So yeah, you might have a point there.

Ally's team of the season is <3

Sels
Aina Milenkovic Van Dyke Kirkez
Rice Fernandez Tielemans
Salah Wood Isak

I'd have put at least one Newcastle midfielder in there myself.
