with forest finishing 3rd with 79points and blackpool finishing 6th with 70points and getting promoted is it about time we scrapped the unfair play-offs? its not sour grapes its a serious question 9 points difference thats 3 wins!

Would you have taken 3rd at the start of the season and accept play offs?
I thought so.
And yes it does sound like sour grapes, but I can understand it cos I thought that as well today.

Nope. The play-offs are good for the league, keeps things interesting. Plus, we knew at the start of the season that we needed a top-two position to guarantee promotion.

Had we taken the chances that we created when we played them at the City Ground in regular season it would have been 4 wins and we would not have seen Blackpool in the playoffs at all.

We have only ourselves to blame there.

At the end of the day we simply wern't good enough.

Keeps the Championship season alive for so much longer, the play-off's can only be positive for the game.

No wonder my post count..

Plus, it gives 8 (I think) sets of fans a trip to Wembley, a joyous occasion no less.

To make it fairer for the higher-finishing teams, I'd give the 3rd place team an auto spot at Wembley. 5th would play 6th at 5th's, with the winners playing 4th at 4th's. The winner of that lot would then meet 3rd at Wembley.

I think it would be better if 3rd in the Championship played 3rd from bottom in the Premier League.

I couldn't help but think, that could have been us today getting promotion, but i think Blackpool deserved it after they way they have played recently, they had bottle and determination and NO pressure what so ever in the play offs and final, so fair play to them, i even think with some wise signings they may even stay up....these things happen.

Well done Blackpool, just dont beat Derbys record for god sake.

Would we think that 3rd place being promoted would be a better idea than the current playoff system had we finished 4th, 5th or 6th? Probably not. lol

I think the whole Playoff thing is good for football. It means we have just a few more weeks of football to look forward to as the season ends not to mention the extra revenue generated to support four key clubs. And.....there's always the glamour and prestige associated with a day out to Wembley.

Of course, there's disappointment for three of these teams yet it's the opportunity for them to show and prove how they perform under pressure.

Yep, it's how the playoffs started I think. I think it's also how it still occurs in Scotland.

Almost, but not quite. There's no play-off in the Scottish First Division, but there is in the Second and Third. 4th in the Second Division plays the second to bottom in the First Division and 2nd in the Second Division plays 3rd in the Second Division. The semi's and the final are all two legged affairs. Same happens in the Third Division.

lets not forget we could have been alot further in front if we hadnt took our foot off the gas, didnt county loose once in the finnal after being 20+ points ahead of the 6th place team that beat them

No qualms against it.

We finished 12 points behind 2nd place so to claim we deserve to go up auto's too because we were nine points clear of 6th is a little rich.

There were only two teams this season worthy of automatic promotion.

3rd place should get straight to Wembley

4th play 5th , the winners play the 3rd place team.

gives some reward to the team that finishes 3rd (and in the olde' days would have been promoted)

I think in Serie A it's the team that pays the referee the most that is promoted :D

To be honest I am glad we did not go up, Billy is very right and we are not ready and it would have resulted in a very embaressing season in the PL. Another season in the Championship and I reckon we can go up and stay up with the right additions made and the revoluton behind the scenes continuing.

I think Blackpool fans will finish their celebration emotions next week and then feel very down that they might perform worse than Direby next season. They will be scared and likely will become the "joke" of next season in the PL - and that is not fun for the fans.

So good luck to them, but it might all go very wrong for them now.

3rd vs 3rd playoffs sound good in principle, really exciting. The only problem lies in the fact that there is a massive gulf in class between the Premiership and the Championship that maybe wasn't there when the playoffs were run in this way and isn't there in leagues that still use this system!

Could be a complete mismatch. Then again, I could always be wrong...

The promotion/relegation play-off was scrapped immediately as there was wayyyy to much lying on just one game, and with total jubilation of one set of fans, and total desolation of another caused way too much trouble at the time.
