Out of position?

We have needed a DM since the Moose did his leg. Looking at our defence, there's usually one of the below left out, at any time, even with injuries:

Wilson, Morgan, Breckin, Chambers.

Could any of these be seen as a potential stop-gap at times? I'd be interested in Wilson or Chambers in this role, myself - just for a little while, just to see what it brings out in them. It's another senior on the pitch, another theoretically steadier foot. Having typed that I'm now thinking of Morgan's runs. They don't often come to anything but maybe he's just starting them a little too far back? I know none of the above are renowned passers, but maybe they can improve when not as hamstrung by defensive duties, they don't need to do much, just get the thing and get it to someone creative, who will be less far away.

I'm talking shit here, aren't I?

Too much bloody FM 2009!

I'm a sucker for a 4-1-2-1-2, or a 442 diamond or whatever. My current DMs are Kompany and Moussi, my AMs are McGugan, Guti and dos Santos. I'm not doing great. Did my usual thing of scraping into Europe in my first season back at the top, then buying too many players as cover for the four competitions I'm in - the result is always that league form suffers and I make progress in each cup, injuries don't see replacements step up and perform in the league, morale drops because of the competition and there's no way to explain to the players that without the numbers I'd not have enough cover to field a strngish team on any given matchday. Need to build more slowly, I think. It's not like I'm expected to bring home the EURO (UEFA) cup.

Sorry, drifted off-topic. I'd be tempted at least to try my above suggestion when any of those are in the reserves, though, if I were Davies. It's putting defensive ability where we need it, and making the passing game easier for the individual concerned.

No, not really. Playing a holding midfield role, at a high level is a completely different discipline than playing centre or full-back. For full-backs, the majority of the game will be spent running forward and backwards, they will very rarely be called to work horizontally across the field. The same with centre-backs, to a lesser extent, as they have less license to go forward. A good holding midfielder or the other hand, will spend the majority of the game working horizontally across the pitch across the back four, with more freedom to roam, but more positional responsibility placed at his own initiative, rather than rigidly sticking to a position.

In short, it's a very different discipline. I'm not saying that our back four wouldn't do a good job, butit would be down to their individual versatility and would likely be another square peg in a round hole, who would liekly drop into the back four, rather than doing their supposed job, leaving us short in midfield.

No difference to currently then since Perch keeps dropping back into the back four and not doing much of a job in midfield , leaving a gap there while McGugan is admiring his own boots.

True indeed, however Perch is probably a better option than any of the current back four, just because he sheer effort level makes up a little for his lack of position sense...I certainly couldn't see Wilson for example putting in that same level of effort....

No point putting in that effort when he's the one who created that problem in the first place by being out of position and let the opposition have free reign in the middle of the park. It's like putting out pockets of fire while the source of the fire that is the root of the problem is not being taken care of. It's like fighting a pointless battle , you stamp out one attack , another one will pop out because the midfield is controlled by the opposition.

The pairing of Perch & McGugan have both been worthless in recent weeks and yet Davies have praised them. Makes me wonder whether Perch playing so deep is due to Davies instructions.

I had to laugh when Newcastle named Ryan Taylor wide on the right of midfield on Sunday. Calderwood's first game in charge...

Coincidence?

Calderwood is only assisting Hughton.

Besides , i believe Ryan Taylor can play as a right midfielder as he did for tranmere & wigan at times. I believe he already assisted in 1 or 2 goals for newcastle since his arrival so i don't see the problem ?!
