I'd rather the players fitness and preseason was full and useful than having players sat about signing autographs personally.

they should do what derby do and hold an open training session in the stadium where people can watch that looks quite good

Yeah i would have agreed before the kids came along. We are constantly berated by the sheep for having
lower attendances and the open day is or could be a way of attracting youngsters, its also probably the only day of the season the kids can get photographs and autographs for free.so i see your point but 6 hrs signing for the kids or 6hours on two flights to portugal where maybe 300/500 reds will be.?

They should have an open night, move it to squares at about 10pm , guaranteed autographs.

I remember back when i was little (many years ago!) the open day did invovle going to the training ground and watching them go through the motions and then after that the players would sign autographs, it was a bit of a free for all but it was great fun. I couldn't get any autographs but then i spotted Steve Hodge still running around so decided to stop him :)

I remember going on holiday to Rhodes one year and went the old Monte Smith Acopolis above Rhodes Town. There is also an ancient running track with stone stadium seating - fantastic place to visit. The view as the sun sets of the town below is really quite magical.

Anyway, whilst I was there AEK Athens were on a pre-season training camp and they were running around the old stadium. I got talking to them and they said to come and train. So there I was one late afternoon and early evening going through the paces with a Greek Super League team. It was a fantastic experience and one Ill never forget.

They showed real hospitality, top men!

Forest should do some pre-season training events in the stadium for free, signing sessions, introduction of the players, back room staff - all over the PA system and new TV?

An opportunity for the club to give it's mission statement for the season ahead.

Don't you think they should be doing something for the kids one day out of training is not going to hurt anybody they are proffesional sports men afterall. there is to many kids supporting the likes of man utd, liverpool etc now so forest should be encouraging them to come along.

Yep, we shoudl be doing everything we can as a club to make sure that the kids of Nottingham support Nottingham Forest.

Whilst I agree in principle the bit about flights to Portugal isn't the best example to use. The reason these trips are done isn't so the players can relax in the sun, the training is intense and all outside factors are removed, the players are forced together at all times including new signings in an attempt to almost force them to bond. I'd be more disappointed if the Portugal trip was called off rather than the open day. It hasn't officially been called off yet anyway and whispers like this are always floating around 90% tend not to be true.

I wasn't suggesting in the earlier post that open days shouldn't happen, just that preseason training should be the priority :)

As people have said already on this thread i think its important the kids of nottingham have a chance to meet the players and get an autograph and photo taken with them. Also,, the chance to go behind the scenes around the stadium would be good for them. I used to love the autograph days when i was a kid,, it was a chance to meet my idols like Pearce, Clough and Hodge. It was always exciting to get the chance to meet the players you idolised week in week out on the pitch, it made me feel special. What are Forest doing to make todays kids feel special?,, what incentive are we giving them to support their local team?

I suppose the club would point towards to kids for aquid scheme. Are they still also running the offer where kids get free shirts and matchday tickets on their (7th/8th?) birthdays?

Plus surely nobody idolises our current crop of players in the same way we did Pearce/Walker/Hodge et al lol

I think Camp is idolised a lot more than those bunch of 'neverreallywonnuffinks'.

Yeah, good point Eddie. I remember going to the open day many moons ago. Good day. It is sad for the kids not be able to get all the signings, but they can go down to the training ground and get the signatures there

Well, it this is true ... shot themselves in the foot, once more !

Last year it was on the same day as the Riverside Festival - many kids got to visit the City Ground that had never been before. Great advert for the club just before the season starts.

And as for kids for a quid - many other clubs in the Championship have games where kids can go free !

This club couldn't market a free lottery.

Here's what I dont get.

The club is oft criticised for not being able to market things properly, however when they do market things well, they're criticised for 'spin' or 'cynicism'.

For example, the timing of the signings and season ticket renewal dates would constitute good marketing, yet they are heavily criticised for their 'marketing ploys'.

Now they miss a marketing opportunity and they are criticised for never being able to market anything.

That's not entirely surprising, is it ? Maybe if they were a little more subtle about it ...

I go to about a dozen home matches per season. I happily pay my money. I hear nothing from the club until one day a letter arrives through my door. Oh look ! The opportunity to buy a season ticket ...

I think the problem is that they put most of their effort into marketing that is aimed at making money now. You would have hoped that some of it would be aimed more at the community and the fans (both old and new). It's a little less direct, but I'm sure it would make them some cash in the long run.

Fair point.

I just think they're criticised a lot when they try to market stuff for marketing, and then criticised when they miss opportunities.

The whole thing isn't done with any form of consistency, though.
