One Year From Now....

Cast your minds back.....

This time, 10 years ago, Dave Bassett was sacked with us facing relegation back to the old Division 1. We had stormed to promotion, had some really top players, Pierre Van-Hooijdonk, Kevin Campbell, Colin Cooper that had helped us achieve that amazing feat of winning that title. I have never seen such a buzz around the club like I did after that !

Slowly, things started deteriorating, the club captain left, our second highest scorer left, and our main striker, our top scorer and best player went on strike because he was so disillusioned with what was happening to the team ! We eventually went down, and in our first season back in Divison 1, we appointed David Platt...the rest, as they say, is history !

Ten years on, we are, if we dare speak about it, on the verge of gaining promotion back to The Premiership ! 10 Years ago, I thought we were mad to get rid of Dave Bassett, I thought if we are going back down, then who else would be better at getting us straight back up ?

So we come to Billy Davies, on the verge of taking us back into 'The Promised Land'. Things are different now, and I feel optimistic that if we did gain promotion, then we would give it a bloody good crack and not try to make a quick buck like last time.

So, one year from now, and if we find ourselves in a similar position to the one we found ourselves in ten years ago, Billy is the man I would prefer to steer our ship back again if we do come back down. I just hope that history won’t repeat itself, that we sack our manager, bring in someone with no hope of survival, and appoint an untried manager with a view to the future meaning that the last ten years come round again...

Slight difference is the squad we have currently has next to no experience of the Premier League or top flight football. Gunter and Smith are the only two I think I'm right in saying?

If we went up I'd expect the players to give it their best shot. I think a lot of fans would feel the same and this is mostly based on the years of indifference playing in League One. Bassett took up a team who weren't unfamiliar with the top flight.

Earnshaw with Direby and West Brom. Shorey if we keep him

Did Anderson ever get a game for the scouse?

Edit: Bit lame for post 5,000. I was hoping for something a tad more dramatic!

Have to say I agree heartily with the OP. I never understood the logic behind sacking Bassett, a proven promotion specialist, only to replace him with Platt. Fast-forward to 2010, and even if we do go up only to come straight back down in 2011, I'd still want us to stick with Billy.

IF we go up, then we will be an unknown force in the PL. That could really work to our advantage.

I see it like this - a lot of players in the premier league didn't start their professional careers with a prem team. They all had to start somewhere.

I'm not necessarily saying our lack of experience will see us doomed from the start - just pointing out that we won't go unbeaten for 19 on the trot and neither should be expect such a thing. Regardless of league position should we make it to the top flight, we should stick with our playing and non playing staff and let them develop - if we didn't get promoted I'm sure that would be the case anyway. Why punish success?

I was thinking about this this morning. What I really hope is if we go up we don't spend the club into the ground again, I'd rather come back down, get the parachute payment and have another go than do that.

All the pain of the last 10 years came about from gambling on Platt and shit players, mis-management at the top of the club that lead to the eventual drop to L1 and the sale of the likes of Jenas, Reid, Harewood and Dawson. The way we go about transfers now has been proven to work without killing the club, we need to keep this same approach in the Premierhsip and not roll the dice again if we get there.

One year ago Reading were flying high and only missed out on Automatic Promotion by losing the last game of the season.

Look where they are now.

Things change very quickly in football. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

If we went up could we redevelop the main stand with the extra cash? :D

£60m for this team would be unbelievable. With an average wage of a reported £5k we'd have room to manouver with getting in new players and, more importantly, start to develop long term plans. Money into the youth setup would be a prime usage of the windfall.

The difference between the championship of old and this seasons is massive, there is a lot more exposure this season so current premiership teams would know what to expect

Unfortunately, with sucess in football comes higher amounts of wages. We sign 15-20 grand a week players, the rest of the squad will expect more; bringing the average wage up quite a bit.

This is all IF we get promoted, there are too many games left to to stupidly get carried away like Newcastle.....

We had clowns in charge. He was also replaced with atkinson, not platt.
They were working on the same logic as selling half of the most successful strike force in europe at the time...and letting our club captain leave for free.

Absoloute clowns.

Whilst we can still improve in our consistency there's not much improvement going to come into this tide from twatting three or four past everyone we come across and neutralising them at the back. Sure we can consolidate in this league in this season, but you are either moving forward or backwards, one of the ways a football club IS like a normal business, so we need to be taking this squad, building it up nicely and allowing the players to improve by challenging them.

We are indeed returning from whence we came ten years ago, this is an excellent thread and deserves more attention, because we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of history if we don't heed the departure of Bassett.

As for Billy, I think his approach to each game will mitigate against the increase in quality when facing half the teams in the Premiership. The almost light-heartedly forensic nature of preparation at Forest is more than a match for many of the one-dimensional managers in the Premiership.

We would ship goals up there due to inexperience, but they've not much experience of us, either. The skills our players are learning under Billy are transferable.
