One Win Could Have Cost us Our Place

Been in the garden this morning and just enjoying a cup of tea, at the moment. Thought filtered across my head, that I wish to share opinions on.

As Forest fight relegation, one goes back through games, points won, lost, gathered where we felt there was little chance and sacrificed where there was hope etc. But to me the pivotal hinge of the whole season goes back to a home win, which may turn out to be an unmitigated disaster.

How eventful for the season were the three points scrapped in the home win against Barnsley ?. CC was sitting on the knives edge, the blade had been sharpened and his obituary written. Anything less than a win was unacceptable, we had gone five league games without a win, failed to use a couple of decent draws to kick start and motivate the season.

So Forest beat Barnsley, CC was granted a stay of execution, for that next month , BD was denied the opportunity of a months work before the Transfer Window opened, was this four game spell following this victory, the crucial period when Forest's season went bottoms up, even accepting the fine win at Southampton was in this sequence of games ?

Although hypothetical, I wonder what changes we would now be seeing at Forest, if they had failed to beat Barnsley.

If they were going to, the time to sack CC was the period before the Barnsley game and not much later. There was always a feeling he was on borrowed time.

However, I thought we'd turned a corner under CC - I wonder how things would have panned out if he stayed? - Given the form at the time (which was good) the Doncaster result and performance was a major shock - but it seemed to me to be an excuse, not a reason (once again, given the results we were getting at that time) to get rid of CC. Given that we were understood to be courting Davies around the time of the Barnsley game I would say that waiting for that excuse to sack CC was very weak leadership by ND/MA which may well cost us our place in the Championship.

At the end of the day, the 3 worst sides in the division will go down.

Other teams can also point to "if only" scenarios.

Theres still enough points to play for to save ourselves. If we dont pick up enough of them, we will be relegated.

Furthermore, if we dont pick up enough, we will be relegated - and deserve it.

I saw enough about us yesterday to give us hope. Wolves were very physical and we had to match them - little choice really as the ref gave us no protection whatsoever.

With a bit of luck, we could have taken a point yesterday - but wasnt to be.

Keep the faith.

Why does the end of the season has to be so close to exams?

I'm shitting it, and can't revise!

I think points have been hard enough for us to get regardless of who's in charge. I think if you take away the three points against Barnsley and give them to them instead it would probably send us down at the end of the season.

I think BD had enough time to identify our weeknesses. Especially as he was linked months before he arrived. He should have been watching us knowing he could potentially be here.

He identified his targets. We just didn't get them. We didn't do too badly in CC last month here. Apart from the Doncaster game.

With the benefit of hindsight CC should have been sacked after we failed to beat a poor Norwich side playing with 10 men for over an hour but you have to remember that at the time, apart from that game, we were playing well and it felt like we were on the verge of turning the corner.

Eventually the Donny game happened and I felt sorry for CC on the touchline as the cries of 'OUT' rang around the City Ground, the way he looked reminded me of a boxer who was taking too many punches and had no hope of hanging on for the bell, ultimately it was seconds out and in came Billy D.

But as has already been said, defeat to Barnsley and we'd be well adrift of safety. Keep the faith, we'll be ok.

As interesting and debatable that point is, I think the 3 points were more important. You could turn that on it's head saying we got the same results even though Calderwood was sacked and we lost to Barnsley. Those 3 points lost could've been costly.

I think the point he was making is that Davies didn't have time to assess the squad and buy players, make proper bids etc, which he would have done had he been given the job if we'd not beaten Barnsley at home.

Equally, though, if rumours are to be believed, and Davies was lined up a long time before, why wasn't assessing players and making clandestine calls then?

Nothing would have changed IMO. We would still have had the acquisition panel and Mr Arthur doing our negotiating regarding transfers......

Therein lies the rub.

If we had a Board that was willing to spend big when necessary rather than try for survival on the cheap how different would things be?

The Club have banged on about our weaknesses since the autumn but when the chance came to strength those areas it wasn't taken. Yes we were linked with a number of players but it only takes a derisory bid to achieve that -not a realistic offer that is turned down.

I believe the Board are gambling on staying up by the skin of our teeth by spending the minimum amount of money rather than buying players in and finishing closer to mid-table.

Financially that may be wise (do Clubs get allocated by final league position in the Championship?) and a relegation battle may bring in a few more fans on matchdays but it does nothing for my nerves.

At the start of the season we were the biggest spenders in the division. I agree that money could've been spent at other times but you've got to give credit where its due.

Indeed we were the highest spenders, However we were a team with alot of league 1 standard players in, Other teams already had alot of championship quality players in their team so didn;t have to strenghten as much. Whatever way you look at it if we go down it is because our team just isn't good enough, and that is down to the board.....

I was never a CC-hater. He was a nice guy who showed he could get good players to come to the club. However, he was constrained by the same things BD is - lack of real investment. CC got players for the future but the problem of staying up is NOW not later.

He was using his time to scour the footballing world for excuses!

No matter who was in charge, whether caldewood had gone at that time or not the fact is we (the players) are simply not good enough. That's why we are going down. Our league position at the end of the season will be exactly where we deserve to finish.

Why would he need to scour? Surely he has a book of them! :)

Have you never seen the 'Fly Fishing by JR Hartley' Yellow Pages adverts?

It would be like that, but instead of a loveable old gentleman playing the role, it would be an ugly dwarf Scottish ball of rage.

*picks up phone*

"Eh, yae havent'ae gotta coapy ah 'Fitbae excuses' bae W. M. Davies have ye, ya radge ****?"

(After a few of these, he gets an affirmative response)

"Ye dae! That's barry! Mah name, aye, it's W. M. Davies, ya ****!"

etc

Aw man, I really should go to bed, but this detective work is too juicy.

It appears one of our fans are going round and righting all the wrongs, but also keeping the faith. For some reason he has a height fetish too.. He's changed Carlos Tevez's height, Kevin Doyle's height and done all this here to Billy Davies's page.

The guy who changed BD's height has changed Forest to 'Inbred Bellends'. Clearly a bit of a feud going on here ;D

I love Wikipedia.

Looks like he was correcting Sheepish looking additions then, maybe he missed the height.

This is great stuff.

I might start a Wikipedia feud thread.
