On this day in 1966

8th March 1966 - We had paid Arsenal a record fee (for us) of £65,000 for Joe Baker who immediately forged an affinity with our supporters. He joined John Barnwell who had been a team-mate at the ‘Gooners‘ and made his debut on this day in the 1-0 home win over Burnley, when 28,246 spectators rolled up to greet him.

All together now..............Zigger - Zagger

I had a cardboard figurine of him (from a Newspaper set I believe) and posters on the wall from Charles Buchan's Football Monthly.

I went to a benefit dinner at Forest for him. He had apparently fallen on hard times.

Too young to see him play, but by all accounts a true great. Sadly no longer with us I understand.

Won a t-shirt in the quiz btw with him on the front and some nice words on the back. :)

I remember the day he signed. How we got him from Arsenal I will never know.

Joe was simply the best, the 'King', a great footballer and a lovely, unassuming man. All these years later I can visualise him in the centre circle, ready to kick off facing the huge crowd in the Trent End. Joe always had a smile on his face, and had a habit, prior to kicking off, of stooping and rubbing his hands together before passing the ball to Frank Wignall on his left.

Joe had everything, pace, craft, and a great finish. Such a shame that his career was virtually ended when he had barely reached his peak. Brian Labone admitted years later that his manager, Harry Catterick, had ordered him to 'do Baker' before to our sixth round F.A. Cup tie with Everton at the City Ground on 8th April 1967. What a game, the best I have ever seen, it will stay in my memory till the day I die.

R.I.P Joe. The most popular player ever to don the Garibaldi red.

He also had more songs about him than any other Forest player in history, the old ones will know them....

I Went to the same 'do' and spoke to Joe at some length. He said how humbled he felt, and he could not understand why the fans loved him so.

I still have a similar t-shirt and wore it to the game at the City Ground following Joe's death. It still hangs in my wardrobe. The legend on the back reads:

'This benefit is for those Forest fanatics who remember the days of 'real' football, lucky to be of the sixties generation, weaned on the skills of Storey-Moore, Newon, Hennessey, Wignall etc.
But the biggest hero of all has never been replaced in our hearts; Joe Baker, 'the King'. OUR No. 9- a short, slightly podgy little man, fleet of feet with spring heels and a deadly eye for goal.
This appeal is for Joe and a reminder of all the great memories that live with us forever.

ZIGGER ZAGGER ZIGGER ZAGGER THE KING HAS RETURNED'

Does that bring back memories. Joe Baker and Ian Storey-Moore were my first heroes.

The word legend is used far too often and easily these days. Joe Baker-there indeed was a legend. He death on a golf course in 2003 at the age of 63 was as untimely as it was deeply sad for all Forest fans of a certain age.

'Joe Baker, Joe Baker
Is it true what the Trend End say,
You are the King,
Oh Yeah, yeah!'

How long did he play for Forest - games / goals etc?

I remember years ago when we were in the prem and he came on the pitch before a game and all the 'older' blokes started singing zigga zagger zigga zagger and I didnt have a clue who he was at the time. Obviously since his name is always mentioned and ive relised how high regard he is held

I would love to see some footage of him playing

In April 1967 a horrific tackle by Brian Labone in the 6th round of the F.A.. Cup left him struggling to recover full fitness. After a poor 1968-1969 season, during which he scored just four goals in 31 appearances, he was transferred to Sunderland in July 1969. In all he made 134 (+1) appearances for us, scoring 49 goals. Although he was born in Liverpool he grew up in Scotland and gained a number of English International caps despite speaking with a strong Scottish accent.

Never forgiven Labone for ruining Zigger Zaggers career, he was never the same after
