Oliver „No Middle Name“ Glasner

Ever since we threw our pace away on the wing.

The one thing pacey wingers can do is get beyond the full and supply crosses. It's an exciting part of the game and I also think that gave the City Ground some of its buzz and excitement. Something we've lacked during that time as we now have a lot of slow pedestrian build up.
Tbf it was before that

After beating Brighton 7-0 our home results that season were
0-0 Arsenal
1-0 Man C
1-0 Man U
0-1 Everton
0-2 Brentca
2-2 Leics
0-1 Chelsea

Last season we were 4-8-7 (beating Brentford, Leeds, Spurs, Burnley)

The slower build up is fine, and something we need to do. Teams won't always attack us and allow us to break on them, which is what the pacy winger advantage is.

The problem is we get into those positions and then we don't put the ball in the danger area. As soon as we get to the area it's sideways and backwards looking for angles but none of them happen and we don't take the chance of getting it in the mix.

Dyche gets flak for the Everton match where we spammed their CBs with crosses all match, but it was giving them something to do. With a better outlet than Jesus, who has a lot of good attributes but is not going to win aerial battles with those CBs, or more players in the mix, they might have had more to think about, but even then it only needs to take a deflection or something to be an attempt or a knockdown for a player or even an OG. More chance than Neco getting it wide left, not being able to put a cross in because it's his wrong foot, passing it sideways or backwards to cheese or MGW or worse still liam (because as your striker he needs to be occupying the CBs) then looking centrally and finding nothing, working it across like a horse shoe and then either it just dies out or worse still the defence get the ball back and counter.

It's one reason why I think Netz should be our LWB. He may not be as good as Neco overall but with Munoz we can see how a good crosser can effect things and he is left footed so should be able to get down the length of the pitch and pop a ball in. if we do enough of that with both of them we can get through balls from cheese and MGW and balls in from wide areas with Netz and Munoz and then Liam and Jesus can get on the shoulders of the CBs and give them something to do...

You make some good points earlier in your post Stat, but disappointingly, Netz had 3, maybe 4 ideal opportunities to whip-in left-foot crosses or even try and run-in behind yesterday, but played safe passes inside to Schlager instead. In my opinion, he was less effective on that side than Neco.

Three weeks to try something different or further tune the system, theres plenty of the squad not going away.
Get CHO and MGW working on those 10 roles together with Delap (pleeeease)
I'd also work with Ola on that RCB role as he was extremely unlucky to get dropped
And my reservations on Schlager still remain, on balance of what I've seen I'd go with Sangare

Coventry game was no better than Dyche at home to Everton to be fair. We resorted to lumping it into the box towards Wood or Delap and it was frustrating as hell to watch. Desperate even. From a so called elite manager I would expect better tactically. We are an 88th minute winner away from the same points tally as Coventry, who have been largely shit.

No goals at home, not many chances created, turgid football. The atmosphere is crap and people were rightly booing loudly at the final whistle Saturday.

Glasner needs to improve. I'm unconvinced so far. Yet to see Forest play consistently well with three central defenders in the Premier League.

I remember palace fans saying that he struggles against low blocks and beats teams that attack. Think Saturday proved that to be correct so far ! Thought they were poor against us last season when neco got sent off and Gunn came out for the second half I don’t remember him having a save to make ! Still think he’ll come good and he needs more time but we need to be far more fluid and attacking at home.

Nah.

That Everton game was something else. We set-up to deliberately spam lofted crosses into the box. It was ridiculous.

We huffed and puffed vs Coventry, you could tell we were trying to find the pockets of space, we just never got going properly.
Absolutely. Frustrating though Saturday was, it was like night and day in comparison.

I'm not a Glasner fan, but we have to persevere and hope he gets it right.
Looking at the Palace stats for the last 2 seasons he was manager they scored a lot less goals than we did, and we weren't absolutely prolific, were we!

the way i see it, this was the first time this team had to try and beat that low block in the EPL - in this formation. From this forum, i understand OG's tactics do struggle to unlock that, but i'm going to assume he'll be working on that with the team.
From the Athletic article, he talks about the team's nervousness at home, and it is obvious we've got some sort of monkey on our backs. He's being paid a lot of money to work out how to shift that mentality, as moving the ball faster, putting the game more at risk is the only way to beat that tactic (we should know, we lived it under Cooper and Nuno).
He also needs to work out his definitive RCB and a.n other No.10 - as he's tried a couple of variations but it's not quite there.

Whatever is going on, it all needs time. Tactics ultimately are about trust, and whilst most of the team are the same, what they're being asked to do is different, and they need to trust OG, and each other. Then results will come.

The key thing is not only has Glasner already got us a win, but we have looked good at times too.

This isn't an Ange situation where all our Premier League games look terrible and we're only performing against minnows of much weaker quality in a cup competition. We're seeing genuine signs of hope in the Prem, it's just that there's no consistency to them and they're being marred by genuine signs of crap too.

But we've simply just to grit our teeth and work through this for the time being. We're in a decent league position still. We all knew things weren't going to change magically overnight. We can't afford to be faffing about with changing managers again. So let's just get behind everyone and keep our fingers crossed that it all clicks sooner rather than later.

Palace underperformed in front of goal last season they scored 41 goals from 58xg, I think the most underperforming side last season, so they do create way more chances.
In the 24/25 season Palace scored 51 goals from 61.3xg - Yet again another poor performance in front of goal.

Whereas Forest scored 48 goals from 46XG, We were just more clinical
Even in 24/25 season we overperformed massively, 58 goals from 46.6xg

The annoying thing is away from home we have put up 2.3xg and 2.28xg - With 11 big chances in the games
At home we've only put up 0.66xg, 0.92xg and 1.1xg - With 2 big chances created in the games.

I have no idea why this is happening but I feel like we really just need a goal at home and it will free us up. He talked about scoring that goal against Villa and it just came to us naturally after that, whoever the opponent is at home we just NEED that goal.

Thats interesting, what i take from that is that a glasner managed palace with the same system that we're learning created far more chsnces than our lot did (they just didn't put them away)
I'll take that as a good sign

True, we do, but we also need a set of officials who aren't determined to thwart us in completing that task.

I do agree with that. We've scored two goals, celebrated them just for them to be chalked off it's so frustrating.
It's so frustrating, that I've developed the habit of delaying the live stream by a minute or so when watching our games, so that the forum is a bit ahead of me. That way, if we score and it's chalked off, I know it already and don't really cheer. It saves me the bad surprise factor, but it is a very sad way to watch football.

5 points from 5 isn't great, but it isn't disasterous with coaches and players still settling in and old players adapting to a new system.

One point between them yesterday for the three sides that played in the EL last week. Not easiest fixtures in fairness, but still feel they won't win many between between them when they play a few days after one of their 8-17 games in Europe. Above all three already, makes me feel we've plenty of time to get things right.

We've been very good away and it's too bad we've played four out of six at home . Glasner does have a pretty big problem to solve at the CG though.

Failed to score in 9 of 19 games at home this year.
0.79 goals at game.

Unfair to be selective about statistics but I'm going to be. Take out a brilliant individual performanc in a second half against a side whose manager had publicly conceded were already relegated before kick off...and what was to intents and purposes a dead rubber for us against Ferencvaros and it would...

7 goals in the other 17 games. 0.41%. Bleak. I hate the booing that's at every club for almost every home defeat and I don't really like Rockin' All Over the World anyway, but if the "all we are saying is give us a goal" chant came back it'd be justified not just for the nostalgia.

And now VAR is stitching us up by letting us think we've finally scored. Then by the time we've composed ourselves and stopped hugging random strangers say "lol...not really".

Cant see many remaining fixtures where we'll come up against lie blocks though fortunately..(Hull away, Everton home...) So still fairly optimistic.

I am old school, personally I cannot stand "xg"which is something thought up by a nerd that wasn't needed in the first place and even if it was needed, isn't appreciated by the vast majority who watch the game. Just like VAR. Throw all the stats you want at it, we look crap at home. I am betting the Coventry keeper won't have an easier game all season and they were supposedly the worst team in the league.

And then there's picking Dan Ndoye. It's a worry.

Rest assured the big man won't give a flying whatever about xg either. If we slide into the bottom three Glasner will suffer the same fate as the others. We desperately need to turn things around at home, we cannot rely on the odd good away game.

In home matches against supposedly weaker opposition, games where we are likely to have more possession and where there is a need for us to control and dominate the game, I would definitely start with Aina as the right-sided centre-back instead of Cunha. Aina is better on the ball, better at driving forward, breaking lines, and contributing to the build-up play.

With three centre-backs and two fairly deep central midfielders, I would also consider using a more attack-minded left wing-back. Could we, for example, try Hudson-Odoi in that role in games like these?

I understand what Glasner is trying to achieve with Ndoye, and in some away games it can certainly work, but in matches like the one on Saturday, we would be much better served by using Jesus. Yes, he drops deep and is not exactly the type of player Glasner ideally wants in that role, but I think this is where Glasner needs to be a bit more flexible in his thinking. With Delap up front, we already have a player who runs in behind and stretches the opposition, someone who creates uncertainty and chaos for defenders.

He needs to be more flexible then. Surely if your 'system' is weak against certain tactics you need a plan B? And I don't mean chucking everything forward we have on in desperation.

Seems fairly clear we'll do better against teams that come at us & probably struggle against low blocks.

Just as Palace fans said.

I'd like to see Aina as part of a back 3 in another game though, I think that'll help against teams that sit back.

But I'm normally wrong.
I saw enough at Villa to suggest Aina can easily cope at CB and for me would actually be the preferred option in games like Saturday where we're expected to have the ball more.

That Everton game was the most pathetic set-up and performance I've ever seen in this sport. It's incredible that a professional manager did it.
