Oliver „No Middle Name“ Glasner

A lot of people saying that OG's system has never and will never work against a low block, but he won't change his tactic.

I wonder what the managers view would be of a player who was constantly doing something that never worked, and refused to change their ways?

Then again, he does keep picking Ndoy...

January recruitment: we will likely be in the relegation mix, so attracting anyone with the skills, drive, and ambition to do well is either going to be incredibly expensive, or as probable as finding shit behind a rocking horse. This is shaping up as the season we return to the Championship with a white elephant plan for a 52k stadium.
We got £116 million for Anderson, but it has left a financially bigger hole in the team.
We may well struggle to avoid the drop, but thoughts of a European place, or even a mid-table finish seem to be beyond us

This is a concept that I have found immensely frustrating from the middle of the summer. Many voices stating with confidence that there was no rush and we could afford to wait until January to make important recruitment moves.

With respect, I always felt this to be an unnecessarily risky prospect. January acquisitions are notoriously expensive, difficult to fulfill in a meaningful way and players are often slow to fit into the squad.
Usually, any team making great efforts to aquire players in January are desperate and therefore make excellent dupes for selling clubs.

If we are doing well this season we will not need to make any moves in January.
If we are not doing well, we will find the January window to be profoundly challenging.

I very much hope that our club did not have this same outlook as I agree with you, it could leave us in a very bad place. In my opinion we are only an injury away from serious selection problems in several areas of the pitch, not to mention a seeming lack of quality in some areas.

I cannot help think, that if the club did plan to rely on the January window as some have suggested was acceptable or even advisable, that was an unwise decision.

Coventry had a physical midfield, just like Leeds. Spurs, Liverpool and Villa didn't. No room for McAtee to run things, no room for MGW to drop in and when we went long, Pinnock won everything like prime Boly in our first season back. I'm sure it's easier to play through Barkley and Buendia than when they had Onana, Camara & Rogers.

We'll always struggle to beat a team of Ryan Yates' unless we end up signing players like Onana. It's what we were doing to teams under Nuno, Yates, Dominguez & Anderson were just running them down. How we play now will beat 12/19 teams in the league, but the bottom 7 are something Glasner always struggles against for that same reason. Wharton/Hughes would always just get overrun by the press.
I find it baffling Dominguez is seemingly on Glasner’s shit list, I’d have him involved most weeks if I was in charge but yesterday especially I think his energy and work rate would’ve helped massively. Yates as well - we know he’s somewhat limited but he will get stuck in and help win the ball back before giving it to the more skilled players. Yates would of course give away a free kick about 20 yards from goal for no reason but that’s his speciality.

We need to keep calm, disappointing result yesterday but it happens.
Marco Rose, Pierre Sage, Alvaro Arbeloa all getting their players adapted to a new system and their teams are below us.
Ipswich, Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool have also put in some meh performances but obviously above us.
City are just a machine but thought they were very lucky today.

All new to the Premier League, tho', so not quite in the same position as OG who brings 3 years' experience.

New players to him though, like all the others. Glasner has repeatedly said it takes 2-3 months to get going fully. We are 1 month in to the Premier League season after the break I expect better performances.
Let's hope so. Obviously the away performances have been very good, but 1 draw from 4 home games is true a reflection of some VERY poor performances.

I've got some concerns that the players we have don't fit the system. Needless to say, I will be very happy for OG to prove me wrong.

or does his system not work against a team that plays with a back 5? We seem to struggle when teams match us. This is why I dont think a manager shoud scrap a system or be totally for it. I think Glasner likes that system so keep it but have a plan B mid game. For example could we have not put Murilli defensive mid and occupy that space between the midfield and defence when a team is in a low block? It stops the opposing team getting out and we can push mcatee up a little.

Its like Pep with his left backs who used to come play Centre mid. Can CHO kick with his left foot? Because you could have taken Williams off and told Murillo to go into the middle and give Coventry lots to think about.

Glasner has been brought in not only for stability, but to lift the professionalism in every aspect of the club. He will do this too. It will take time and patience. Anyone calling for his head, explicitly or implicitly (which people are doing on this very forum) are completely nuts, and we'd deserve anything coming to us if we even contemplated this.

No we won't

Absolute crap

It's been 5 games for christs sake, get a grip. this is exactly the attitude thats seen 5 managers in a year or so. we do not have a devine right to beat anyone, and sometimes we'll get done and play badly. Look at Arsenal, look at spurs, this is a tough league.

Boils my piss some of the rubbish that's been spouted on here, glasner was a genius last week and now we're getting relegated? give me strength

He is a very stubborn manager in terms of substitutions, he has a core group of players he brings on and he rarely uses anyone on the bench outside of that. It was like that his whole time at Palace, you could predict his substitutions every time.

It’s a shame as players like CHO, Yates & Dominguez probably would have helped makes a difference yesterday.
Especially CHO, we needed someone who could get past a man since they were playing so low but instead we saw Netz come on.

Agreed-we need to find a way collectively to improve our home results and that doesn’t involve yet more managerial change (we were a standing joke in football last season).

We’ve got some good players and a good manager and we need to use the international break to regroup and recharge our batteries and come back ready to face more extremely stern tests at the highest level.

All valid criticisms which I agree with, but I'm not so sure we've seen enough of Glasner yet to say that he's doing that because he's got his favourites.

It's only been a handful of games and he has said that he's still learning about the players. So it might just be the case that he's still figuring some of the players out.

Hopefully the next five or so games show a bit more variety and flexible thinking with regards to both his starting lineups and subs.

Folk need to remember that he finished just one point above us last season.

A season in which we were largely diabolical, were close to the drop & had 4 different managers.

His league record is fairly poor.

Well said. It's also laughable that he's being seemingly tarnished by some for our home form over the last 15-months-or-so.

I am quite frankly astonished that there are some complete f***ing idiots supporters who have jumped on Oliver Glasner's back already, after what, five games? Including games that have been tarnished by - yet again - iffy refereeing decisions?

Give the man time to work.

He is a proven, experienced coach, who will obviously need a little bit of time to get his thoughts across to the team (and remember, this is a team who had four - count them - coaches last season, including, well, I am not going to mention a couple of them, but you ain't going to see them in the running for "Coach of the Year" any time soon, are you?

I want it and I want it now.

Yeah the poor home form has been across 2 seasons now so hardly down to OG. And we can't keep firing managers. He needs at least the season.
Ever since we threw our pace away on the wing.

The one thing pacey wingers can do is get beyond the full and supply crosses. It's an exciting part of the game and I also think that gave the City Ground some of its buzz and excitement. Something we've lacked during that time as we now have a lot of slow pedestrian build up.
