Oliver „No Middle Name“ Glasner

Having watched Glasner participate in the training games out in the Algarve I reckon we no longer need any backup left backs.
The lad has still got it!
 
I'm actually a little nervous about going into the season with the three centre back formation as we've never looked good whenever we've dabbled with it since returning to the Premier League. Usually it's resulted in fewer chances being created and somehow looking even dodgier in defence. Fulham away when Troare tore us a new one springs to mind. Amorim was (rightly) berated for sticking to his guns when every punter in the world could see it wasn't working.

If Glasner can pull it off fair play to him.

We'll soon find out how we do against strong opposition playing like that. Sporting, Udinese/Barcelona, the final 2 friendlies.

Not previously having sufficient playing personnel to suit that system was probably a factor?
Addressing that through summer recruitment and a full, competitive pre-season operating with that system should hopefully make a noticeable difference?
I'd also suggest that - despite his other qualities - we've moved on from having to rely on Joe Worrall as right-CB in a back-3.

I guess we will find out soon enough. I've always been of the opinion three centre backs is overkill when most teams now play with one striker, however Glasner seems to have had success with it in the past and I hope he can replicate that with us.

For me, it depends - if your two-centre back system depends on having at least one deep-lying midfielder screening in front of the centre-backs - you can effectively end up playing with three-centre backs when you're being pushed back anyway. The traditional skill-difference between centre-backs and midfielders isn't the huge gulf it used to be, so one or more of the central defenders can step forward into midfield if they're not needed as well.
 
By playing three at the back if you just look at the list of eleven players we are effectively taking out one of Bakwa / Hutchinson / CHO/ Ndoye and putting in Diomande.

So we'll automatically be better at both attacking and defending corners, you'd imagine.

@Cureboy mentioned that Fulham away game last season, where we played with 3 CBs and still lost a lot of aerial duels, and both of Fulham's goals came from headers. It was Morato who was the 3rd though.
 
I would also debate we have ever played 3 at the back, we have played 5 at the back - where we flood the pitch with defenders because we can’t defend or are just shutting a game out. The way Glasner plays a back 3 has an attacking mentality by default, the two wide defenders basically operate as fullbacks. Diomonde’s alleged main strength is his ability to defend out wide, him one side & Murillo the other will need less cover & allow more attacking freedom.
