Oldest Football Chant Still In Use...

Hey guys, I have a blade "friend" who claims that their stupid song about chip butties is the oldest one still sung in the football league. I'm only 26 so I was wondering if anyone knew what our oldest song is that we still sing? For example, how long have we been singing Mull of Kintyre or Lost That Loving Feeling?

I'm looking for proper songs btw, "Nottingham, Nottingham, Nottingham" probably doesn't count.

Cheers.

according to Wikipedia You'll Never Walk Alone began being sung on the terraces in the early 1960s so you'd have to go some to have a song with better longevity than that I suppose.

What about the old wheelbarrow song, and more to the point where the f*** did that come from :D

Welcome to the forum

Easy to date the chip butty song, I think Justin Haywood was the artist of the original, Annies Song ?, find the date of it's release and you have a starting date for the chip butty song.

As for Forest, at one time everyone had a choir and so many songs were altered to suit each team. Stoke City's Delilah may take some beating though for originality, as our serious original song Lost That Loving Feeling is easy to date, release of Top Gun.

Wikipedia claims it was John Denver, and I'm no expert, but 1974 seems the unanimous date for Annie's Song.

I would have thought that 'sign on' to the scousers has been around since the Manchester ship canal was opened.

Now why on earth did I think it was Justin Haywood, when the world and it's mother know it was John Denver..........On the back foot, epic failure now, will throw myself in front of Combine Harvester as a self inflicted punishment ::) ;D

My cousins from in and around the Nottm area, always refer to my brother and I, as Carrot Crunchers, every now and again when things get lively and boisterous at a family do, that one gets wheeled out for a quick rendition ;D,

The best of the Forest ones I remember from the 60's went something like this...............

Hi, Hi E Hi - Grummitt is better than Yashin - Baker is better than Eusabio and Derby are in for a thrashin.

For the younger element on the forum, Peter Grummitt was our goalie & Lev Ivanovich Yashin was Russia's keeper. Said to be Russia's best goalkeeper of the 20th century.

Joe Baker was our centre forward and Eusébio da Silva Ferreira (European Footballer of the Year in 1965)

I used to like the Joe Baker song adapted from "Excerpt from a teenage Opera", "Joe Baker!, Joe Baker!, is it true what Trent End sing, You are our King"

Do any of you oldies remember when the BBC ran a "Kop Choir" contest in the late 60s/early 70s? They got down to a final 6 which included Liverpool and Southampton and I believe was won by Rotherham !! (cant remember the 3 other finalists)

Oxford Utd fans have been singing 'we all live in a yellow submarine' since the 70's.

Another Joe Baker song I remember :-

In Dublin's Fair City
Where the girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheel'd her wheel barrow
Through streets broad and narrow
Crying
Joe Joe Joe Baker
Joe Joe Joe Baker

Plymouth Argyle still sing that now (replacing the Joe Baker bit with *multiple claps* Argyle). Dunno if anyone else does?

The one that pi$$ed me off the most and I think it was sung by Chelsea supporters was the 10 green bottles song, by the time it was halfway through you was ready to commit Harry Carry.

It was NEVER Derby in the sixties! They were an insignificant third division club. I think I am correct in saying untill 1969 we did not play Derby for the previous 20 odd years. I know it might be hard for you younger guys to comprehend but back in the day we didn't give a flying f*** about Derby!

With that song we just inserted the name of the opposition of the day. We had our own version of the Kop Anthem which went Walk on Walk on with Soap up your arse.

When we played Man U we had a version in 'Tip toe through the tulips' which went something like;

Top toe through the Moss Side with a pick axe and a sawn of shot gun etc...................

Also when Man U came down to the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar;

Georgie Best Superstar
Walks with a Wiggle and he wears a bra!

The oldest I remember at the CG was simply

2 4 6 8 who we appreciate FOREEESSST

But the oldest aware of is the West Ham song;

I'm forever blowing bubbles!
