Sorry probably has been discussed already but my internet has been down a while.

Those flaming Reading tickets have Notts Forest on them. What is it going to take for people to realise Notts and Nottingham are 2 very different things.

Are you sure it's us that's playing Reading on Saturday, and not this lot:

Stephen Hunt would certainly feel at home with those flowing locks.

There are far more important things in life surely!

Anyway, in my younger days living in a village 10 miles out of Nottingham we always referred to Nottingham as Notts. It's an accepted contraction of the full name of the city so I'm past caring what people call us now.

I'm not annoyed by it whatsoever, however....

I am becoming increasingly annoyed by my friends up here in the NE deliberately calling it Notts Forest in order to anger me. They know I don't care, but it's beginning to grate a little. If only because of thier gormless expressions... BAH

I dont know what everyones problem is about calling us Notts, ever since we were formed we have been refered to as 'Notts' a friend of mine has pictures programs you name it right back into th e1800s of forest and we are refered to as Notts...Only God himself Mr Clough took a dislike to it and the fans have since jumped upon the band wagon

I used to get a bit eggy about the whole Notts Forest thing myself, but these days I'm far less bothered by it. In fact I wish we didn't make such a big song and dance about it, as it's actually far easier and more comfortable to say Notts Forest than it is to say Nottingham Forest.

It's not as if anyone is denying we're representing the city and not the county - it's just that this particular abbreviated version of Nottingham is exactly the same as the abbreviated version of Nottinghamshire (to clarify that a bit, my best mate's surname is Cooper, but we all call him Coops). Besides, do you not want Nottingham Forest to represent the entire county? I know I do! We're the best team in the city and the best team in the county. All the more reason to call ourselves Notts Forest and get right up the Magpies' noses.

We were even called 'Notts Forest' in the program for the recent friendly against Notts County.

People who say Notts Forest are either on a wind-up, or don't know what they're on about- so it's pretty easy to ignore.

We used to be a city team, but now we're county, so if you want to support the city team and not the county team move to the city and support County not the county where you shouldn't support County, nor City, unless it's Southwell.

It's quite simple people.

Speaking as an English teacher with a background in linguistics, Notts Forest actually has a really nice ring to it. It's the rapid double 'o' phoneme that works best for me (as in John Collins, Dom Joly, Don Johnson, Doc Holliday, and so on). But the pseudo-repetition of the 'ts' sound at the end of 'Notts' (which is actually reversed to become 'st' at the end of 'Forest') also helps to make the whole thing extremely pleasing to the ear.

Past caring but where is there an S in Nottingham so how can it be an abbreviation. Nottm is the abbreviation. Our name is part of our history and come from the Forest Recreation ground in Nottingham hence the name Nottingham Forest so I can understand why people get frustrated.. Notts for me is the abbreviation of Nottinghamshire and we're not Nottinghamshire Forest. However I accept the point that Notts has rightly or wrongly become an accepted name for us by some however I don't think its too much to ask that a fellow Championship club can print Nottm Forest, I mean how hard can that be ?

Actually, the abbreviation is Nottm when written, but not when spoken. Do you walk around saying something like "I support NOTTAM FOREST"? No, didn't think so. You simply choose not to abbreviate Nottingham at all when you say it out loud.

There's no 's' in Cooper either, but we still all call my best mate Coops for short. Gunter could, similarly, be acceptably abbreviated to Gunts, even though there's no 's' in Gunter. Likewise 'Bols' in Ashes to Ashes (Gene Hunt's nickname for the totally 's'-free Bolly, which is itself an abbreviation of Bollinger Knickers).

The whole point here is that other clubs or fans aren't being disrespectful in calling us Notts Forest - to everyone else it's just a perfectly sensible, adequate and - frankly - catchy abbreviation for Nottingham Forest. Just like other clubs and fans say things like Man U, Man City, West Brom, and so on. Think of it as a term of endearment and you won't find it so upsetting.

To be honest it doesn't bother me that much, it doesn't rob us of any identity.

The people who complain about it whenever it pops up any time or anywhere bother me more.

We're not Notts Forest wah wah wah... :-*

That's good enough for me.

If you want to shorten our name from Nottingham Forest, just call us Forest, I mean who else would one be talking about? Forest Green Rovers?

When a fan says Notts Forest, it doesn't bother me. I some times correct them, but some times I don't.

It is when commentators say Notts Forest that really gets to me. This is meant to be their profession, they are meant to know these things, meant to be experts and yet they use a contraction that is wrong.
