Nigel Doughty and the World Cup

Disclaimer, Have no knowledge just thinking aloud.

As those who read the forum will acknowledge I am a Doughty supporter and remain so, for what he sunk into the money pit which Nottingham Forest must have become for him.

He is without doubt an astute and succesful business man, but with Forest continuing to need a large input of money, from him, year by year, how long will ND be prepared to make up the shortfall, especially as he has been the subject for some serious and offensive suggestions from fans re his motives for the club and his ownership.

What now frightens me, is that if Englands WC bid had been succesful, there well may have been an avenue to allow ND to retrieve some of his vast amount of money he has put into the club, whilst not affecting the day to day running.

New Stadium, franchise revenue, offspin events held at the ground all manner of commercial events, maybe Forest's new home to be a star in the East Midlands. But the WC is not to be held in England, Nottinghams fair city will not be hosting games on a world stage

So no obvious route or avenue to allow ND to receive some income from all that he has invested in the club............My fear being that the club will become a weight around his neck, being a loyal supporter with the most expensive season ticket in the ground may well start to gall...................so what next for Forest and Mr Doughty ?

No change.

There is no free money coming our way so it will be done the old fashioned way. Doughty is clearly a man of patience and i'm sure he will continue in that manner.

I would only begin to be concerned if there was no way to be able to get a new stadium built and increase the value and revenue for the club. If the council/NIMBYs disrupt the process and it ends up at a dead end, I can see him choosing to cut his losses...

Well many football clubs have proved that building a new stadium, even if they have to fund it themselves, is definitely more beneficial than staying put.

We'll just have to do the same and find the money somehow, it's just a huge shame that we couldn't have been saved tens of millions of pounds by having a stadium built as part of a World Cup.

Or another way to look at it is that doughty will now realise that the only chance of him getting his money back is if the club are in the prem; hence a busy january (he says fingers crossed)

It's hugely disappointing and MA is right that the club must continue to fund the playing side with the aim of getting into the Prem. Anyway, funding a new stadium is out of reach without external investment at the moment so we are stuck where we are. I imagine ND may have to scale down his ambitions for the club.
Bang goes the dream, hello harsh reality.

i fear nigel doughty being the clever business man he is already had a idea of how this world cup bid would pan out hence the summer activity (or lack of it), I now fear the club might well tighten its belt further older players such as earnshaw will not be given new and improved contracts maybe even sold in the January window to avoid them going for a free, a new ground will not increase the value of the club if we dont actually own it, it would require a large amount of money to be invested by doughty himself to get that off the ground so to speak.

We wouldn't have owned any "free" ground acquired through the World Cup journey...

end of the day we cant fill the city ground, we are miles away from being a established premier league side, we cant afford to buy our own ground, cant compete with cheating bastards who dont pay there debts, and the championship isnt a bad place to rot

You don't invest in a football club with the expectation of ever making a profit (unless you're keith haslam or milan mandaric). I think we will carry on as usual with Doughty putting in what he can afford. A man has to do something that isn't work after all and football clubs are a rich man's hobby and probably more fulfilling than collecting orchids or trying win the america's cup or something. Probably forest's fortunes are more tied to that of Doughty Hanson than the English FA.

Likewise you don't expect to spend £60m to just plug a hole and the club be in the same league position as when you took over 11 years previously.

I'm very much in agreement with Sedge. I admit I've been critical of Doughty in the past, but I am mindful that the club could become a heavy financial burden for him.

Sure, but I'm pretty sure he didn't plan his future based on the outcome of one long odds decision, plus there are only 4 profitable premier league clubs anyway so getting promoted is hardly a guaranteed way to make doughty wealthy.

Yeah I understand that. I don't for one minute expect that Nigel wants to become wealthy from Forest. But surely he'd like to see some sort of return on his investment that goes beyond finances.

A takeover and super-mutisport super stadium shared by Forest, *o***y, Ruggers and Hockey.

Do they make much from their advertising? Its the only reason that I can think they come up with such bilge.

I can only think it's purely an attempt to drive up site traffic, which seems odd. Would have thought that any advertising revenue goes to the Vital network directly.

That is a load of crap from them; but we must all remember that they got ramsey right, lol. That article is a load of rubbish though.

Their track record on predictions is hardly prolific though.

And apparently the poster who started the take over rumours and stated a definite date for an announcement hasn't posted since.

You do wonder what their agenda is though; surely it can't be just about traffic and site hits?

Or maybe they're just a bit mad?

I cannot imagine what a take over, if there was an actual take over being prepared, which I doubt, could achieve.

The only option I could imagine is they, potential owners would get, a decent sized club, with a track record of a decent fan base, at far less cost than a Premier league club. But it would be a huge gamble to try and push enough money into a Championship club to guarantee promotion.

Also and lets be honest, as much as we love Forest, if an investor wanted that, there are many similar sized clubs who must be in a somewhat equal position to ourselves, to choose from.

None of those other clubs have two silver stars on their shirts though..

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that Vital have got the wrong end of the stick. It's not inconceivable that ND has been courting extra investment for the club, especially if the long term plan is to move to a new stadium. Obviously these new investors would want a stake in any development and probably in the club. 2+2=5?

Either that or Vital really do live on a totally different planet from the rest of us :D

If he's put in, say, seventy million and we get ninety for promotion, then if he spends ten million to (surely?) get us up in the January window there'll be a ten million pound profit.

It's so simple when I pull figures out of my arse like that. Doughty should try it.

The problem with that is, all the playing staff have built in wage increases if promotion is achieved, and they would have to spend at least another £20 million on transfers and wages to try and keep the club in there.
