Don't know if anyone read Nigel Doughty's column in the programme on Saturday so for those who didn't and for the benefit of our armchair supporters I was interested to read and I quote:-

"Indeed, although the Dexter Blackstock deal was announced towards the end of our acquisitions, the deal was actually done relatively early and I remember ringing Billy telling him that I had some good news and some bad newsfor him. He asked me what the good news was, I said I had just concluded negotiations with QPR for the acquisition of Dexter. He said what then could be the bad news? I said unfortunately he has to play left back for the season.

My Conclusion.
He didn't want Marthur fcuking this one up!!!

Sometimes you have to thyink yourself lucky in having the chairman we do. We often hear other clubs criticise their chairman and board likewise but you rarely hear of fans or others alike cirticise our chairman....

I agree. Perhaps if he felt able to addresss the supporters more often in this vein, there would even more optimism around the place.

Good write up from Nigel.

I Like how he addressed the 'new stadium' issue.

Reading statements like this really does make me optimistic that our club really is in good hands.

Nice to see a bloke at the helm who has a genuine love the club, rather than a group of foreign investors just wanting to make a profit.

Excellent write-up ! I'm glad he mentions about avoiding the souless new development, and how he seems to of looked into the development of the city ground !

I believe the club is in the safest hands it has been in years from top to bottom !

I too was pleased to hear the 'soulless' issue mentioned.

But then I remembered that this came from the man who presumably signed off our latest kits from Umbro.

It does show he's listening though. As he says, it must be difficult to even begin to plan until the FA's verdict is drawn.

You've drawn your conclusion from what exactly? He goes on to praise Mark Arthur later on in the article.
You're seeing things that aren't there.

I think to be fair, he has taken the lead roles in the majority of deals whilst MA was left to deal with the sponsership that took a little longer to deal with than normal...

Cracking read that.

He doesnt skirt around the question of a new stadium, he is very to the point.

Anyway that FreeForest is a load of twaddle.

Love when he calls Billy small!
big manager (at least in reputation and track record!)

That is a great article.

I've always had a deep respect for Nigel Doughty and that has just made me smile.

I have no doubt that he will lead us back to the Premiership sooner rather than later.

I've always been a fan of Doughty since he became chairman of the club,, i feel we have a fan at the helm rather than a uninterested businessman. I for one really appreciated every penny he's invested in this club, and even though things haven't always gone to plan i feel he has helped put us in a good place to move forward.

My reading of that is that we thought we had a left back lined up and it didn't happen, which would explain the No 3 shirt and the lack of left back.

Ah yes, but he's not exactly well known for his sartorial taste ...

So those kits could have been worse !

It is a really good read and shows him in a good light, given that the audience for his address is quite large it also felt quite personal, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the words of Ngel in every home program, the whole thing made me smile whilst reading it.

And not before time, he may well be a supporter - he may well be the Chairman but Oh' what short memories some of you have.

Within his 10 years tenure Doughty has took us out of the Premiership to the lowest level in the clubs history so it's about time he pulled his finger out and delivered on the promises that he has spewed out over the last decade.

Doughty enjoys the relative popularity he does in part because he's canny enough to know not to expose himself too much. The only time there's expectation of a statement from him is when a manager goes, which is reasonable, and then you often get MArthur anyway, which is fine because that's his job. Familiarity breeds contempt. This is not a Sam Longson figure, ND I suspect has listened to Cloughie's historic criticism of chairmen and probably met most of the awful bastards we've been saddled with over the years. He's not there for the personal glory. He's not there to soak up his share of the credit when we do succeed either.

When fans think of him, we can reasonably only go on what he has said and this tends to be very occasional, always intelligent and never less than as full of warmth and genuine respect for the fanbase as any chairman could hope to sound. When one of his goals is achieved (debt clearance, promotion) he makes that point, in passing, when discussing wider futures. He's learned form his lessons - chucking money at ****wits to sign more ****wits and lazy fat greedy egos that are gone in 12 months. Keeping managers on too long. Paying over the odds for a player. Selling before buying. His message here is that the England World Cup will not be another Euro 2006 when it comes to the Club - a debt that has been a thorn in our sides ever since.

He underplays it in public and you can't have too much of that these days.

This isn't about short memories, dude. Our fall from 'grace' has happened under his chairmanship in part, but the seeds were already sown. We are solvent ad stable, we might not otherwise have been. If you want scapegoats for the last decade look at Platt - he had 13 million, yes, but he didn't have to sapzz it on shite. Then manage the talent he did have like a blind man with asperger's syndrome teaching algebra to sixteen year old inner-city crack smoking youths. Blame whatever took Harewood from the club and whatever kept Huckerby and the other lad we had on loan from it, because that certainly wasn't just Doughty. Blame Joe's ego or Podger's gutline or our strikers just for being our strikers until last year. Blame Megson's dirty job he couldn't work beyond or Charlie and Frank for not staying. Blame Colin's callowness, the referees, or maybe even blame Des Walker for his own goal at Sheff Utd. But don't pin it all on Doughty. Particularly because judging by your writing and his, he's the smarter of the pair of you.
