Opinions of course, I think Pope definitely is one of the better keepers in the League. He is not just bottom half standard. He is just below that elite level for me.

You can count on one hand the mistakes he has made in the Prem over his 4 seasons and he is one of the best shot stoppers around.

But I do agree we should spend it elsewhere. Don't worry about the price, it's all speculation.

It'll be interesting to see where he ends up. Personally I don't see a top half Premier League side taking him myself, a newly promoted side or one of the teams in and around the bottom half (i.e. a Leeds or a Southampton) feels more likely to me.

If we're signing another keeper it'll be one that's noted for his passing abilities. We play a certain brand of football and having a keeper able to pick a good pass is key to that. It's the last position on the pitch I'd be looking at strengthening this summer.

That said, Pope is an excellent keeper. I just don't think he's suited to the way our team plays.

Though I have questioned aspects of Samba's game, I don't think keeper is any sort of priority for us. I think he is good enough to be our first choice next season, and I think Horvath gives us a solid (if a tad uncomposed) backup.

Just like Henshaw says on Twitter, you can tell if we’re ACTUALLY interested in a player if their stats coincide with what’s crucial to the way we play.

In this case it’s much of the same, I just think if WE’RE at all interested it would just be the value portion of it all. That’s IF we get him for the rumored price of 10mil.

Would he daylight robbery.

Pope is one of the best keepers in England now if we had unlimited resources sure sign him but we do not and have a very good keeper already so the money needs to be spent in other areas.

The agents of all the best players in the relegated teams are going to be trying to start these sorts of rumours to get their men back in the top league, especially if international players. I'm calling bullshit on this one. Pope will be expecting around the £60k/week he was on last season and has a year left on his contract.

Not the area we need to address. Brice deserves his shot and I'd argue Horvath may hold his own too.

Pope would be perfect for Newcastle to be honest. Especially with Howe's Burnley connections.

I also think he'd be a good fit at Spurs as Lloris is definitely on the decline.

£60k a week?
At Burnley?
Zero chance of that…

Folk were surpised when Cloughie brought in Shilton, They made similar points - thought that existing options were adequate, fees were too high and other positions should have been prioritised. In hindsight , it was genius.

And there's another side to Moneyball. Players with potential should be brought in and sold on at a profit.

If statiscally Pope offers more to us in our system AND we can sell on Samba at a handsome profit - it makes sense.

Samba still gets another opportunity but it's at another club

Pope doesn't offer more to our playing system though. Not sure what people are seeing that i'm not, but as far as i'm concerned the 'sweeper keeper' role has been pivotal for the way we play. Pope cannot play that role, it simply isn't where his strengths are, he's a great last man/shot stopper but he's shite with his feet

Samba can control the ball better than pretty much all of our team (left foot or right foot) giving us a constant option/get out of jail free card at the back. He can distribute the ball better than atleast half the keepers in the prem, and we build the majority of our attacks through him

Replacing him with Pope removes part of our identity that made us successful, and for what? -£20m and a bit of a better shot stopper?

Just because something worked under Clough doesn't mean it will now, football is a completely different game to what it was 50 years ago.

Samba is fine, he's great at distribution in fact he's even got an assist this season, I very much doubt many GKs will get that.

Samba also had an 80-85% save percentage for Rennes(?) When they got relegated, the best in Ligue1 at the time.

I'd love us to be free flowing and operating a sweeper keeper passing style but in reality points are the only currency that matter. The PL is a ruthless place and for me Pope would be more likely to save us points than Samba. With the position we'll be in most likely (fighting for our lives) the better shot-stopper is surely more useful than the better passer?

I don't know why I keep commenting about Pope as I think there's next to no chance of him signing anyway :D

We're going to have to agree to disagree, I think your logic would have more weight if Samba was a notoriously bad shot stopper (which clearly he isn't)

Sambas save percentage is about 78% this season. Saved 114 conceded 35

Pope's is about 70%, he had about 7 more saves than Samba but conceded almost 20 more. Saved 121 conceded 53

This is league games only.

Samba deserves a chance in the Prem regardless of whether we want a new keeper or not

No room for sentiment. If a better player becomes available we take them and move forward. That goes for any position.

Pope is a very good keeper, and I'd love to have him here.

Saying that, if Burnley want anything more than 15-20 mil for him, I'd say save the money and use it to strengthen elsewhere.

He's a good keeper, but I have confidence Samba can do a great job in the prem and I don't think he deserves to be on the bench.

I saw rumours that apparently Burnley would sell Pope for 40 mil. Good luck getting anywhere near that for a (now) championship player!

The price for Pope is offset against the trade in value for Samba (at a stretch Horvath)

If Pope is worth £20m - who would be prepared to pay £10-15m for Samba? l

That is Moneyball

Moneyball doesn't involve selling one of your most valuable assets after a promotion campaign to help pay towards an even bigger fee to potentially replace him, that's gambling

Moneyball is analyzing data to identify cheaper alternatives to target when you're priced out of the top markets, smaller investments with bigger +EV returns
