New deal for McCleary.

It's Baggio

John Robertson
Signs on 'til 2012.

Garath McCleary has become the latest Nottingham Forest player to pledge his long-term future to the club.

The 22 year old winger has signed a new three-year contract, committing him to The City Ground until the summer of 2012.

It's the third time McCleary has signed a new deal in his 18 months with The Reds - a measure of the progress he has made since leaving the non-league game.

"Coming from non-league and now having three years with a club with so much ambition is a dream come true," he told Forest World.

"The club is looking to push on to the Premiership and I obviously want to be at the highest level of the game.

"It's fantastic. I'm glad that the club have recognised certain things in me and I'm delighted to be here."

McCleary joined Forest from non-league Bromley Town and wasted little time in making an impression.

He made his debut for the club just over a month after his arrival and last season he made 43 first team appearances, including 16 starts.

I suppose this will constitute has one of our new signings!!!

Not wishing to sound negative and all that but I won't be jumping through no hoops with this one.

Come on PSR, last week you were filling the forum with joy and now this.

I guess it's all gone a little quiet?

I know mate but I'm board like the rest of you - the silence is killing me!

I think my one source has emigrated - Capello has committed "Harry Ca-ray" Jones has gone to Scunny and you lot are no help either, I've not seen one bit of juicy transfer gossip all week and you expect me to be full of the joys of spring!!!

I like McCleary a lot and think he's got a big part to play in the coming season. Can't see him as a regular starter, but more of a 'game breaker'. He offers something different when we need to change a game.

Great news for the lad, hope he keeps progressing under BD. Agree more of a bench player, but like towards the end of last season, when he comes on and bursts forward the opposition don't know what to do with him.

I'm a big fan of McCleary. Very good dribbler, uses both feet, obviously has great pace, he's not afraid to keep trying to take his man on, actually crosses it when he gets there, not afraid to cut inside and have a shot himself either, tracks back as well... he has got so many positive attributes, and very few negative ones, I can see him playing in the Premiership in the not too distant future. He's a great talent for sure.

Great to see the club persevering with him, he's still quite raw but I think that he has come on so much over the last 12 months or so.

At the beginning of the season , it was obvious that he doesn't use his pace enough , he likes to take players on but he doesn't have the experience nor the skill (at the time) to go past them , he seldom use the flank enough , doesn't run down the byline to cross the ball in , he would always try to take on the player which proved to be his downfall a lot of the times as he would get dispossessed and lose the ball. I remember during the last pre-season , when McCleary played , he would consistently lose the ball and he did not get down the byline once while Perch actually did by using his pace to run down and cross when he was playing as a right back.
I remember Calderwood did say that McCleary needs to learn how to use his pace more , to know when to use his pace and when to use his skill and when Billy came , he also said similiar things. Obviously , McCleary is still very much a work in progress as he did improved over the season.

Agree with Marshal, he is, to use an American Football term, a 'project player' - someone who clearly has all the skills and physical attributes to be very good, but hasn't quite put it all together yet, hoepfully the good coaching he's getting will help him do that soon.

Capello may be on holiday, but he will post if something juicy comes up, he has done before.

We mad 4 signings last week and have been promised more. The squad will be in Portugal by now (or maybe tommorow) alongside Billy, so he's hardly going to be signing anyone today or tommorow is he? ::)

I'm glad he's been offered a new deal. As with Joe Heath and Matt Thornhill i think he still has some development to go through as a player, but overall i can see him being a first team regular for many seasons to come if he works at it. To come from non-league as he did and within 6 months be playing in the Championship is a big step to take,, but he took it reasonably well and put in some good performances last season. I thought consistency was an issue at times,, but that will improve i'm sure. Best of luck to him.

I rate this guy highly.

Skilful, quick and this supposed cracking shot on him which he hasn't particularly proven at first team level yet.

He will do well one day in the game. I could see with further development someone like McCleary playing at the highest level. Hopefully with us!
