Our assistant manager David Kelly having 'NED' on his training top at the Direby game, in reference to 'ned kelly' im sure but why? A famous killer, robber, ******, why would you want to be associated with that.

But, i do like this wiki entry 'In 1869, the 14-year-old Ned Kelly was arrested for assaulting a Chinese pig farmer named Ah Fook'

There is a degree of romantic nostalgia involved in Ned Kelly. He's an anti-hero. There was a film made which showed him in a good light.

As a 40 year old man I can remember DAVID KELLY playing football and he was booed everywhere he played.I always thought he gave his best but he was crap I for one dont really like anybody who copies in any way some else.My belief is be yourself. I must admit having David Kelly as your best mate shows me that you have not got any mates at all.

Its a big downer for me regarding Billy Davies.Hope he his good at is job though but I for one would just laugh at him in training etc.

Same here, or grimace and think 'what the f*** is that all about?' It certainly gives the impression that he's not one to be taken seriously.

How can you say that?

Some of the best footballers have been crap coaches / managers. Some unknown or non-pros have become decent coaches / managers.

This statement is completely irrational and im sure that if you did that in training, good old BD would send you for a few weeks worth of "fitness work". Deservedly.

Ned Kelly is similar to Jesse James or Bonnie & Clyde. They are heroes to some, but they were criminals and murderers.

I think you misread why he'd be laughing at him in training.

I for one am fed up to the back teeth of seeing nice people trying to do the right thing, whilst overpaid pampered players let all and sundry down week after week.................If we have a couple of right bastards in charge who will get them footballing and get results, then the fans will be happy and the poor dears will earn their bloated wage packets.

Jeez, criticism for your nickname. No wonder the CG has a reputation for negativity.

I liked his postmatch interview with Robin Chipperfield when asked if he enjoyed the experience he answerd; "yeh, football's good int it" Seems like a decent bloke to me.

I liked that bit too, and if Sir Alex had said it it would be repeated on TV for the next 2 weeks.

David Kelly was a decent enough striker (like others above, I'm of an age where I can remember watching him...)

I'm also Irish by birth, and can remember watching him in the green of Ireland.

As for "Ned"; it's nothing more than a nickname, of course...

If he's a bloke that doesn't take things too serious and will eve have a laugh at himself then that's the obvious reason that him and BD (who does seem very serious) work so well together.

How is that obvious?

Just watching the players warm up in recent games you can tell that 'ned' is one of the lad's.
Even silly little things like hassling the players when they are shooting makes more sense.I can't remember Kerslake getting to involved other then collecting the balls up.
Decent player at this level as well.Scored against us a few times if i can remember correctly.

Stupid thread. It's a nickname. Lighten up, man.

Also, saying he got booed everywhere he played is an absolute crock. I remember the Newcastle fans giving him a standing ovation before during and after the game when he returned to St. James's as a Sunderland player, no less.

Yup , Kelly said that. The guy who said that Kelly is booed everywhere doesn't want Davies in the first place and so he pretty much is soured on every staff that Davies brought in and is just making up stories to feud his hate.

Kelly had a golden career when you look at it. 606 games, 194 goals. One in every three games for a career of that length is pretty extraordinary.

Add to that going to a European Championships and two World Cups, his record as a player is very impressive.

I think this was a good thread on "our Ned".It has generated some good views.
I stated earlier that he was a good player who tried hard but he often played in struggling teams and he did get a lot of abuse.
This does not mean that he has become an excellent part of our coaching staff. If he helps achieve our long term goals then great like anyone however I do find it a joke when people try to become or use someone elses name to be more famous.

He should have DK on his shirt.

How pissed off would you be if Stuart Pearce stood on the touchline with psycho written on his jacket? It's a nickname, I doubt he gave it to himself. How do you know that BD didn't come to him on his first day and say "here's your training kit Ned"

Psycho and Ned are two different types of "nicknames".Psycho is like fatty, skinny or Big ears etc. Its a name taken for his character/looks not Ned who is because its a famous person who has a surname of Kelly.

Its not something that is personal to him.

Why state something as fact, when you clearly don't know whether thats definantly true.

Everyone calls him Ned, so im guessing it IS somewhat personal to him.
