Neco Shay Williams of WALES

I seem to be swinging match by match between Neco and Sangare being my player of the season. Back in the Welshman's camp after today.

Should have scored with the header, put a lovely ball in for Taiwo's goal. Back to the normal Williams after a sketchy few matches.
He did everything right. It's unbelievably difficult to score a diving header from where he was which was bang on the corner of the 6 yard box. He got plenty of power and headed it down and it's always going to take a bit of a goalkeeping error or positional misjudgment for those to go in unless it flies into the far top corner

I've been asking if he can take a corner for a while. Apparently he can!
Thing is that ship could easily have sailed for him because when we first came up he took our set pieces before MGW got his mits on them and was (from recollection) a bit shit

But then we all know how much he has worked on his game since then

I love a defender, and I absolutely love this young man.

Tenacious, athletic, likes a tackle, and has a great delivery on him as well.

PoTS for me.

MOTM for me........defended & attacked like a man possessed - that cross for Taiwo was a John Robertson cross..........fantastic.
The Taiwo cross was the sort of ball a striker loves, run onto it, at pace, and just relax.. Whats been missing most of the season, has been that run, whether by design, or by choice..

I can imagine that I if I was a winger I'd absolutely hate playing against Neco. He never gives you a minutes peace, always ratting around everywhere. He fly in at you if he gets the opportunity and he'll block anything you try and send past him even if it's with his face or his bollocks.

I'm struggling to fathom why no other club has tried to sign him. Even if it was a top 4 club I think he could force his way into a few and even if not he's be the best rotation/back up full back in the league.

For me he's our most underrated player
Who doesn't rate him to make him underrated? Maybe from a league perspective he might be as he is never talked about with the top fullbacks, but I don't think he is underrated by the fanbase.

Anyway, how many goals do you think we missed out on because it has taken till now to realise he is our best corner taker? Glad to see the new set piece coach is earning his money! I know people like a left footer and left back as they can take the ball down the outside and get a cross in, but when he cuts back and whips the ball in to the back post area they can be lethal. Before big T scored he had whipped one in to that area and I think MGW/Murillo just couldn't get on to it.

Yes he didn’t have anything to aim at really. Hard enough to get a normal shot in from there let alone a diving header!

He has been really good lately again though.

Underrated is perhaps the wrong word

Maybe underappreciated or under-the-radar would be more accurate

Also I wasn't referring specifically to our fans; you don't tend to hear much about him in commentary / in the media etc, sometimes I think his contribution gets overlooked

He's a) A Defender b) Not a flashy defender & c) a fullback

They always go under the radar more then any other position on the pitch.

When Carragher was taking the piss out of Neville a few years back and he said "Nobody wants to grow up to be a Gary Neville" , he meant a fullback, he was right in what he said.

All I have to do is look at grassroots and you'll see why it's the least fashionable, talked about position.

Its one position short of being put in goal growing up and that transmits through to the media as well.

Definitely underrated nationally. Nobody ever mentions him in any context.

In terms of us, our most underappreciated player is Dominguez IMO.

All true. Most full backs are failed wingers. I'm not being derogatory when I say failed but it's the reality of it.

I think it's an outdated belief to be honest. Back in the 'good old days' full backs had 2 jobs, mark wingers and defend crosses

The position is one of the most important on the pitch these days, good ones don't just provide width but can also step into midfield when needed. It's a position that's heavily involved in build up play + overloads are a massive part of the modern game too. Outside of CM i'd say it's the most demanding position on the pitch, not only being progressive but also staying on top of all the defensive dirty work
