Silly decision obviously but in the half-second or so you have to react and you know you can save a goal I suppose it's a bit of an automatic reaction.
Unfortunately for us it's probably the one position we can ill-afford to lose a player. We're obviously after a full back (and were anyway) but chucking them into the Leeds match is a risk.

It's silly because the options are
1. let it go in, we concede the goal anyway, but carry on with 11 players
2. save it with your arm/hand, concede the penalty, get sent off, carry on with 10 players, the penalty will probably go in (esp if Sels is in goal)
2 is clearly worse and no-one would complain about his lack of effort if he legitimately couldn't keep it out legally, which he couldn't

Importantly it’s a split second action with very little opportunity to assess the situation and make a considered choice

Yes but he's a professional footballer who came through the ranks at one of the top clubs in the world, was clearly always highly rated. The amount of football matches and training he played even as a child is probably a lot more than most of us as adults and no doubt most of their actual decision making and other motions are pretty much instinctive by the time they are first team players.
He has a pass to a certain extent because of how consistently good he has been and how he generally doesn't cost us chances let alone goals these days, but even so it was clearly the wrong decision, a player his experience and ability should know better and he knows that.

Pleased with everyone’s response to Neco on here. I was gutted and livid at the time thinking that we’d go from a likely 3 points to losing the match and being without adequate cover for 2 massive winnable games.
All in all it’s been a positive weekend and Neco gets a much needed break.

Elite product of Liverpool’s academy (as per his scouting reports and assessments published in the Athletic).
Outstanding, incredibly hard working, player who never gives up.
He has an enormous amount of credit in the bank.
