Nations League

He's useless. But he's a typical FA yes man. Only so much quality players can keep getting you out of trouble.

He has the best squad at his disposal. Look at all the International teams in the world, they'd envy to pick from what Southgate has.

Every other country has had a long season too. Werner just scored twice tonight and he was shite in the Premier League. No excuses. That was dreadful tactically.

In his defence, the teams he’s played throughout this spell of fixtures is missing almost all of the first team. Tonight it’s only Barella, Gigio and perhaps Calabria who would trouble the selectors normally.

The selections are an excuse tonight, but the Argentina performance was equally embarrassing

Had to laugh just then, the italian commentator mentioned how 'players must always remember that they are wearing the jersey of the national team' right as Donnarumma passes the ball straight to Gnabry...

Not sure the booing and chanting at Southgate is necessary. This time last year (almost) he was the best thing since sliced bread.

I'm willing to treat this game as a one off and the last few weeks as a blip.

The players are probably knackered after the intensity of a full PL season and then have had to play 4 glorified friendlies, they're probably knackered and I'm sure the last thing they wanted was to play the Nations League in June.

I'm sure we'll be a completely different outfit in November.
Southgate has still only won one big game for England the Germany game. Otherwise he’s been a very very average manager. I think the Germany game game any he deserved a crack at the World Cup but after watching that I’m not so sure he 100% warrants that. Problem is if Southgate goes honestly Cooper is absolute perfect geezer to manage us.

I'm not suggesting Southgate is a brilliant manager and I was frustrated as hell watching us freeze in the final last year, but I do think he has more than enough credit in the bank for a while yet. A spanking in a friendly doesn't alter anything for me.

I can't think of too many alternatives either, I don't want us to go back to getting foreign coaches in so it would need to be someone like Potter at Brighton. Unfortunately I feel that for many managers managing a PL club these days is preferable to the England job...

Yeah, they were shite against Argentina. Arguably this lot have been better overall then the first team.

I know it's only the Nations League, but I'd expect my captain to be furious in the post-match interview - Kane clearly isn't bothered. And I'm sure the rest of the squad share that sentiment.

It's all very easy and accepting. Nobody seems to be wanting to do any better.

I saw an interview from Southgate earlier in the day and he was saying we love to see the players, wives and kids around the team as it lifts them.

If that's what he's relying on he's got nothing left. That stuff only takes you so far. Tactically, he hasn't got it in him. I'm very sure of it after his Middlesbrough days.

End of the day would Southgate get a job at any Premier League club?

I'd say no. So why is he in charge of the national side?

We need to appoint someone who can actually manage at the top level of the game as opposed to a nice guy who wears a tie and offers platitudes in interviews.

In all fairness how many international managers are at the top of their game? None I'd suggest.

International management is almost entirely populated by managers either at the beginning, or the end of their careers. Long gone are the days where the national team job was the pinnacle of someone's career, it's all about the top end of domestic football now and the Champions League.

I don't know but surely that should be the aim? To appoint a top level manager? Surely?

Again - would Gareth get a job in the Premier League, or even the Championship?

Yeh it has been a bit of a Mancini thing to rotate the first team recently but conveniently not Donnarumma, it was working well but the inexperience is temperamental and just like today you always run the risk of todays result (ci hanno asfaltati)

Mancini still has time but people are calling for Ranieri

I think he would struggle to get a Championship job.

What’s he good at as a manager? Developing team spirit? This team look lifeless, and I would say having a good spirit is fairly easy for an international team.

He spends more time talking about politics than football, that’s why he’s the FA’s man. Clean cut, populist answers to difficult questions.

Also, just seen the next game is against England at the San Siro. So that’ll be nice to see a load of England fans in the city.

A pity for you; before the match against Germany in München, several of them were arrested by the Polizei for parading around and giving it the „Heil Hitler“ in public (a hint: if you ever come to Germany, if there is one thing you don’t do, it’s that, especially in Bayern) and some others were arrested for setting off a pyrotechnic in their hotel room.

It seems that many of the idiot following are still present and representing the country, banning orders notwithstanding.

Southgate saying we are not at full strength. So that indicates he was experimenting. That may be excusable.

Anyway if you park Southgate what has shown in these games is that Saka needs sacking off he’s so average. Ramsdale also the hype around him needs to die down no wonder arsenal lost 4th the whole club is just bang average I’m glad Spence didn’t go there.

Evening all, first time poster from long term visitor to the site. God, Southgate’s style of play is about as interesting and inspiring as Gareth himself. He had the best chance of winning the Euros ever, with arguably the best players at his disposal since I can remember. The team looked totally disjointed.
Welcome to the drey (don't worry you'll get the hang of squirrels and G wot karatje!

He's playing Hughtonball and managed to produce a team that is way less than the sum of its parts. But at the same time those players must be absolutely knackered - I don't give a flying F about the nations league its madness to expect them to play at the end of a season then go in to pre-season in a few weeks time and then play more of these meaningless fixtures before a World Cup...
