Narrow pitch backfiring?

With 3 points from a possible 12 in the league at home this year, I am starting to think whether or not the narrow pitch is benefitting the opposition and not us at the CG. It was very apparant against WBA and Blackpool that they came to defend against us and break out when they could. Both were narrow losses and I feel that if we had a bit more room down the flanks we might have been a bit more successful in front of goal.

Has Billy this tactic wrong?

I can't quite figure out the logic of having narrowed the pitch and then playing with an out and out left wing in Tyson.

The narrowness of the pitch didn't stop us creating enough clear cut chances against Blackpool to have scored 6 or 7.

Agree, but maybe we could have created 12 or 13 with more width, surely we couldnt have missed more chances?

is it possible to change the width of a pitch during a season?

Why bring in a winger like Anderson and then narrow down the pitch? Its only a few yards difference but we have such great pace available to us on the wings, i just think we should us that to our advantage.

Sadly not - you cannot change the dimensions of the pitch during the season (I know not why, but that's the rules..)

Just because the pitch was narrowed, it doesn't mean it is narrow

It was narrowed from the widest possible width and thus now is most likely closer to average.

that's probably true actually but it does seem that rather than making life more difficult for visiting teams it's only resulted in blunting what without doubt is our main asset in the team .............pace ! we have some very quick players in the squad and surely some wide open spaces would have been to our benefit , although i do like bd i think it's another case of worrying about the opposition too much and not utilising our strengths.

is our pitch any narower than that of ipswich, sheff weds, qpr, reading though becuase we seem to have been fine playing down the wings there and using pace.

Its swings and roundabouts here. It was only a few weeks ago people were moaning that our main weakness was our leftback. Yes, a narrow pitch negates the effectiveness of Ando but also reduces the deficiencies of Lynch.

I don't think the narrow pitch has prevented us missing a hatful of good chances.

Yeah you can only put that down to bad finishing. Some people have called it bad luck others down to BD's squad rotation. They are contributing factors but not entirely the cause.

Would explain our away form :s

Yeah, I think the point I'm trying to make is that keeping things tight and playing a narrow formation doesnt reaaly make sense when we are at home and have good wide players!

It is also a BIG advantage to those teams who have along throw-in specialist. Not us and we dont defend them particularly well.
Narrowing the pitch was a mistake IMHO. ???

It's a little to early to say really but the fact that we choose to play Joe Garner on the right wing does not really help as it makes us a little lop-sided.

Also, the players are still adapting to it and as others have mentioned, it is bad finishing that has cost us at home so far.

i hope garner doesn't start against scunny , he offers us very little from right midfield and i'd much rather see anderson given a run for a few consecutive games.

I thought Garner had a cracking game today, won loads of headers, held the ball up well, passed it well. I'm sure he'd rather play up front given the choice, but he's doing what is asked of him. Don't think he got booked either?!

he did win a few headers but his passing was far from good , he gave the ball away 3 times within a minute at one stage ,he got no worthwile crosses into the box (which isn't great from a wide man when you have adebola & blackstock both posing an aerial threat if the service comes in ) and he made a hash of the one opportunity he did get , he also doesn't have enough pace for wide midfield but having said all that i would like to see him get a few games up front alongside dexter as adebola should make way for someone.

Have a feeling Goldrick and Dex will start against scunny. BD seems to like Mcgoldrick but with raddy in there i don't think he should start. I would love to see Ando and tyson to both start on the wings with Dex and Earnie up front.
