Another year on his deal feels essential, even if you add in a get out clause for him next summer, something like if we fail to qualify for CL football you can leave if a certain fee is paid.
It would not surprise me one bit. But he reached the end of the road in terms of what he could deliver, similar to Tuchel re being pragmatic but again, lambasted because he never really got the team playing their very best, tactically excellent and well set up..but he was seriously hindered by his strategy in that losing wasn't an option..on the pitch they simply ran out of ideas because of that.We might be calling for Southgate to come back in a months time.
Both sides of the argument can be true. Southgate did well to get England to the latter stages of tournaments but big games he was often second best.I think people are gonna realise pretty f***ing soon what a great job Southgate did. Armchair experts, and plenty on here, had this notion that we should be playing teams off the park playing champagne football. We're not as good as we think. That semi against France we lost against a very dodgy referee.
I see both sides of the argument too. I think Southgate himself thought it was time for someone else. To consistently make the semi's and finals suggested we weren't far off under him though. And I swear the ref was completely bent in that QF against France, shocking refereeing cost us that game not Southgate. Some of the noise and criticism at the time was basic in my opinionBoth sides of the argument can be true. At the end of the day a guy cannot have 5+ tournaments without winning and expect to keep his job, regardless of how well England do in this WC it was the right decision to give someone else a go.
Yeah agree - he could get us a to a certain level of top end tournament football with the talent we had available but it was his tactics and innate caution that meant at the crunch moments he misjudged what was needed. Let's face it in the Euro final "everyone" in the country knew we'd scored too early when we saw that rather than keep the pressure on he wanted to sit back and defend a lead against a side that had scored 12 goals to get to the final. Though admittedly a few games aside we'd found scoring pretty hard that tournament. Both sides of the argument can be true. different this time- we fully expect to be home early. The only way it be dramatic would be if England do well.. max qtr final and that's fine because we have a shit manager with shit for brainsTo be honest our managers are often over criticised. We’re usually about the 8th-10th most talented team in the world, so if we get to the quarters of a World Cup that’s about par. It’s a shame we have to over-dramatise it every time we get knocked out.
